Australia / Re: My Granny CLARKE
« on: Sunday 05 December 21 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have one photo of Mary Jane as an older woman, who looks very much like her mother Jane Elizabeth Wood(s) when she was a very elderly woman, as well as Her daughter Maria Quinnell when she too was elderly.
There were many more siblings of Mary Jane born to Jane and William Holmes before Joseph Lin Sue (Lim Sue), and Mary Jane and her brother John (perhaps twins as they were born the same year) were the first children born to Mary and William Holmes so it is very unlikely it could be Joseph as the father, although it is never a certainty that William was the father.
I also have a photo of Joseph son of Joseph and Mary Jane, who has definite Asian features from his father.

Hi Margaret.
I came across this thread while searching for Growden/Grouden.
I think I have successfully traced back as far as William Growden who married Elizabeth Couch Saundercock/Sandercock at Cardinham in 1792. I believe this is the William Growden who died 1832 at “Higher Bore Street” Bodmin, aged 81.
That would make his birth about 1751.
There are 2 baptisms listed on OPC for William Growden, both at Withiel:
25 Dec 1752 - parents Lawrence and Joanna
15 May 1755 - parents Joseph and Grace

I need to do some more digging to see if any sibling names or maternal surnames pop up in later generations to distinguish which is right.

Cornwall / Re: Parents of Jenifer Musgrove; Bodmin?
« on: Sunday 13 June 21 01:11 BST (UK)  »
Thank you!
I believe all of the above is correct.
I now see that there were 2 Jenifer Musgrove’s baptised within about a year of each other, which is how I got my wires crossed. Thankfully Emily’s baptism certificate could help differentiate them.
That OPC resource is fabulous and has given me more to go on.
Much appreciated.

Cornwall / Parents of Jenifer Musgrove; Bodmin (Completed)
« on: Saturday 12 June 21 13:46 BST (UK)  »
Greetings RootsChatters,

What I know:
Jenifer (Jenefer/Janifer/Jenny) Musgrove (Misgrove/Misgreave) married William Growden in Lanivet, Cornwall, 9 May 1819.
They had son Thomas, born Bodmin, 1820; son Henry, born Bodmin, 1821; daughter Elizabeth Ann, born Bodmin, 1825.  They then had 2 more daughters in London before immigrating on the Osprey to Australia is 1849.

What I don’t know:
For years now I have had Jenifer’s parents recorded as Richard Musgrove and Catharine Bennet (and I don’t even remember why), however I just found William Growden and Jenifer Musgrove’s daughter Emily’s baptism certificate from St Pancras, Middlesex (Aug 1836) and it has her parents as William Growden and Janifer his wife, who was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Musgrove.
Is there any records for a Thomas Musgrove and Margaret (___) marrying or a baptism certificate for Jenifer? Jenifer would have been born about 1795 based on her migration age.
The other oddity is that William and Jenifer’s other daughter born in London is Jane Arthur. It seems that maternal surnames feature occasionally as middle names in the next generation, so is there some link with a surname of Arthur?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Mary MAPSTON..Horsmonden

I know this thread is from a long time ago, but I have MAPLESDEN relatives from the same area. A few index transcriptions I’ve seen have some variations in spelling so wondered if maybe MAPSTON could be one of them?

One Name Studies: A to G / Re: Calling all Clutterbucks
« on: Saturday 11 April 20 13:19 BST (UK)  »
I know this thread is from a while ago but it came up in a search for Clutterbuck.
That is an interesting story - did you ever learn more?
My husband is a descendent of Clutterbuck’s.
Interestingly I have traced back to a James Clutterbuck who married a Mary Clifford on the 5th August 1780 in Newent, Gloucestershire, England.
They had sons John, Thomas, James, George and Joseph (plus daughters) born from 1783 to 1805 all at Newent. Perhaps a little old to be your marriage witnesses, but it seems these names repeat in each generation.

If your story is true, did they marry to keep any wealth within the family?

The Lighter Side / Re: How did you get into researching?

Being Australian, I had a friend ask if I had any convict ancestors... I had no idea but it intrigued me enough to start digging.
I’m still learning where to look, what sources to trust, how to calculate probabilities to certainties, etc. but I have at least 4 generations back in each branch with many more yet to discover. Thankfully Australia kept good arrival and BDM records. It is one of my many hobbies that I will become engrossed in, then put away for a while and come back to again with fresh eyes.
I did find a couple of convict ancestors, some who got gold fever and followed the Victorian gold rush, as well as an absconding ship hand. I’m sure they would have had some exciting stories to share!

This is very interesting indeed.
My husband is a descendent of William George Clutterbuck who came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth Ann Growden. William was born and married in London, but I believe his father George was from Gloucestershire.
I have traced their lives here in Australia, but if anyone has more information about the family - especially before they came to Australia, I would love to know.

Clare / Re: Augustus O'LOUGHLIN - Any records
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Oh my word! That is amazing. Thank you so much!!
So Austin (Augustine) Harkin does actually exist! And I have a location in Clare.
And Anne (Nancy) and Denis O’Loughlin’s marriage fits too - just before coming to the land of promise.

I’m wondering if the last birth above is John? (Hard to say definitively).
On Anne’s marriage certificate to Michael Moroney she list 2 living and 4 deceased children to prior marriage(s), and on her death cert. it lists her children Honora and Austin, then James and John as deceased.
I have a birth entry for James in Australia (father Denis) so perhaps Michael died as an infant and because he was prior to Honora, she didn’t know about him (and another sibling that has not been found - perhaps the earlier birth of Norry?) so not included in the death certificate.
