Dorset / Re: A mystery exists for me in George Lampman b. 1806 Dorsetshire
« on: Sunday 05 April 20 23:03 BST (UK)  »
We discovered that George Lampman was really Stephen Hallett of Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England. Stephen Hallett chr. 2 Oct 1806 in Burton Bradstock, son of John Hallett and Elizabeth Gear left England and went to New York State. He "married" Deborah Ann Guernsey ca. 1825 and secured land in Monroe, Orange, New York and then Eaton, Madison, New York. He had a family of six children with Deborah Ann, but separated from her about 1835. He relocated to Augusta, Oneida, New York. According to Deborah Ann's testimony, Stephen went to Upper Canada in 1836. She then "heard" that he had died in 1837. Stephen had inherited some money from his mother in 1836 (not the first inheritance from England). This may have spurred him on in changing his identity. In Nov of 1836, George Lampman bursts on the scene and purchases land in Dawn Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario (Canada West). Abt 1838/1839 George Lampman "marries" Alvira Eaton daughter of John Eaton and Anna Steele.  Over the next 15 years he has another family of 7 children. The clue that really tied this together was DNA evidence. Through DNA a number of our lines all pointed to descent from John Hallett and Elizabeth Gear (both families - Hallett and Gear). So who could be the candidate. Then we realized something about George Lampman's death. On his tombstone it gave the date of death and the age. We had calculated this backwards to arrive at a birth of Aug 31 1806. Well, the year was right for Stephen, but the month was a bit out (maybe). However, the tombstone was made later - so, based upon memory. And, there was a discrepancy between the death date on the stone, and the registered death date that had been registered only days after the death. The Death register date calculated backwards from his age came out to a birth date of Oct. 1, 1806. Another clue. The fact that Stephen Hallett disappeared in 1836 to Upper Canada, and the DNA evidence has led us to conclude that George Lampman is really Stephen Hallett (a bigamist - lol).

So, I live in Canada, and do a great deal of research in the records. It is Scotland where the research becomes muddy. The Wight family was definitely from the Ochiltree and Old Cumnock area of Ayrshire. Hugh Wight was born in Pluck, Old Cumnock area, and both Hugh and Catherine were by 1829 of the parish of Ochiltree as regular attenders. The names fit, the ages fit, the place fits.

Thanks Annie! I agree. I did research a number of years ago on the other family, and concluded then that they did not match. But, we moved, and I cannot find the information.

The citing of parents in Death Vitals in Ontario, Canada did not take place until the 1900s (Marriages were hit and miss). The Ontario Vital Stats did not begin until 1869. As I mentioned, I am in possession of Hugh and Catherine's Family Bible. I will include the census records, and a couple of documents that show her maiden name was Brown.

Ayrshire / Catherine Brown b. abt 1806 Ayr, Scotland of Ochiltree
« on: Tuesday 08 December 15 03:11 GMT (UK)  »
My wife descends from Catherine Brown b. ca. 1806 Ayr, Scotland m. 10 April 1829 Ochiltree, Ayr, to Hugh Wight b. 6 Aug. 1801 Pluck, Old Cumnock, Ayr. Catherine and Hugh moved soon after their marriage to Ontario, Canada. Catherine is recorded in the 1851 (Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co. ON b. Scotland age 45) and 1861 (Brantford Twp., Brant Co., ON b. Scotland age 55) census. The census put her birth at abt. 1806. She died 1869 (Ontario) as per the family Bible of Hugh Wight and Catherine Brown. Hugh Wight died 1873 (Ontario), again per the Wight family Bible.

In searching for the ancestry of Catherine (and Hugh), I came across a family that matches well as parents of Catherine.  A Catherine Brown was born in "Burnockstown" Ochiltree, Ayr, Sep. 1806 (christened 14 Sep. 1806) to John Brown and Mary Kerr. Hugh and Catherine's children based upon the Scottish Naming practice would fit this family (the only glitch would be the fact that both fathers were John, but the first daughter was Mary Wight (named after Catherine's mother), and the second was Margaret Wight (named after Hugh's mother). Another clue is Hugh and Catherine's son William named his one son, Quentin Wight. This would fit the family of John Brown and Mary Kerr as they had a son Quentin. Also, a picture exists among the Wight family of the Brown family of Ayr.

This would be fairly cut and dry, however, every tree on ancestry has Catherine Brown daughter of John Brown and Mary Kerr married to a Meickle. I researched this family, and found (Muirkirk as opposed to Ochiltree) it did not fit the data, but... I have no definitive piece of data that counters their assumptions. Any help would be appreciated.

The marriage date is definitely wrong, and thus the maiden name. They would have been only 5 and 8 years old at the time. Ann was older than James by a couple years. As for the children, James and Ann had ten possibly eleven children - all it seems in St. James (except perhaps Margaret - the Margaret on the list is wrong).

1. Margaret Whitfield b. ca. 1720 d. July 1807 Redcar, Yorkshire m. Lionel Spencer Berkley
2. James Whitfield b. 11 Apr. 1722 ch. 14 Apr 1722 Westminster buried 14 April 1722 Parish of St. James, Piccadilly
3. Ann Whitfield b. 27 Mar 1723 ch. 8 Apr. 1723 Westminster buried 7 Mar 1757 St. James', Westminster m. 27 Dec. 1746 Saint Benet Pauls Wharf, London John Latimer
4. James Lumley Whitfield b. 1 Jan. 1724 St. James, Westminster  ch. 27 Jan. 1724 St. James', Westminster bur. 9 Feb. 1726 St. James Piccadilly
5. Thomas Whitfield b. 8 June 1726 Westminster ch. 29 June 1726 St. James', Westminster buried 20 Aug. 1730 St. James', Westminster - a transcript states born 1730 (another child - but actual just says C for child).
6. John Whitfield b. 27 Dec 1727 Westminster ch. 22 Jan. 1727 St. James',Westminster died young
7. Thomas Whitfield b. 14 July 1730 Westminster ch. 24 Aug 1730 St. James', Westminster burial  29 Mar. 1731 St. James, Piccadilly
8. Elizabeth Whitfield b. 4 Jan. 1731 Westminster ch. 27 Jan. 1731 St. James', Westminster d. bef. 1760
9. Mary Whitfield b. 25 Mar. 1733 Westminster ch. 11 Apr. 1733 St. James', Westminster d. bef. 1760
10. Eleanor Whitfield b. 23 Oct. 1734 Westminster ch. 24 Oct. 1734 St. James', Westminster d. 1810 Hammersmith, Middlesex, bur. 12 Aug. 1810 Hammersmith, Middlesex m. 18 May 1769 Fulham, Middlesex to Stephen Bland (brother of John Highlord Bland, cutler to the king). - I am Eleanor's descendant

James Whitfield was b. abt. 1696 in Headington, Oxford son of James Whitfield, gent. James d. 1760 (the tombstone has 4 of October as death) Twickenham burial 4 Oct. 1760 will proved 16 Oct. 1760 Margaret Berkely, Ann Latimer (deceased), Eleanor Whitfield all mentioned in will.

Ann ? b. abt 1692 d. bef. 4 Jan. 1749 (probably December) Twickenham - burial was 4 Jan. 1749 - the memorial was erected as part of James' will - so burial date seems to have been put on the memorial for death date.
