We McElmoyles now have a DNA project on FamilyTree DNA. Here is the website: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/mc-elmoyle/about

All we need now are some people - doesn't matter where you live or what line you are from - to add themselves to the project!

Thanks!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Franklin Genetics

Hello KD146,

When I initially saw your question, I thought you were my friend Lisa Franklin, who runs http://FranklinGenetics.org. I had a chuckle and emailed lisa to tell her I thought I saw her here on RootsChat. Her reply was "did you tell them about us?" So you have been told. When you look around and find a place to leave a note, leave it for Lisa Franklin.

Seems like you might have a bit in common!

There are very few McElmoyle's in the world in comparison with other Surnames of Ireland. My specific interest arises from the McElmoil family that settled in York County, South Carolina, specifically Daniel McElmoyle, b. 1796, Ireland, d. February 10, 1867, in York County, SC. Possibly married to 1) Mary Chambers, was married 2) Mary J. Pardue. This is Daniel's WikiTree Profile: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McElmoyle-2

From my grandmother's notes he had a brother, James, who also immigrated to North America and settled in Port Lambton, Ontario. I think this James was b. June 24, 1801, Ireland, d. September 25, 1880, Mooretown, Lambton, ON. He married Catherine M. Cowen. This is James' WikiTree Profile: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McElmoyle-32

The fact that there are James and Daniel's in every McElmoyle family and in every generation does not help, but that is the way of Genealogy right? Our ancestors did this to confuse us on purpose! ;)

There are lot's of variations listed on the McElmoyle One Name Study Page:

McElmoyle Spelling Variants:

Mac Giolla Mhaoil
Mac Giolla Mhichil
MacElmeel
MacIlmoyle
McElmoyle
McElmoyl
McElmoil
McIlmail
McIlmale
McIlmoil

I have decided to get to the bottom of these two McElmoyle brothers origins and have started a McElmoyle One Name Study on WikiTree to help with this endeavour. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:McElmoyle_Name_Study

Hope this information tickles information out of some one!

Hey Cell,

Thanks you for the welcome!

Your are right that WikiTree is what it's members make of it. If you send me the information from the Irish Census that is wrong, I will gladly add it to the profiles with a note about the correction. As for the rest of the tree that is wrong? It will continue to be wrong until someone steps up to correct it, if not you someone else, like I am offering to do with the smaller mistake.

That's what makes WikiTree different from other One World Family Tree's. It's a community that works together to make things right. Wikitree has active projects working on many things, one of which is finding and sourcing every unsourced profile on the big ole shared Tree.

Hey Hackstaple,

I just looked and there are 40 Oddy's now (they may be the ones you added). The profiles on WikiTree are what the profile manager or other volunteers make them. So if someone uploads a GEDCOM but doesn't go back and add sources and information then there isn't much.
