Essex / Re: SEAX

I paid for a day subscription. Then the site crashed and kept coming up with "error". £ 5 wasted. I would advise anyone who wants to look on Seax to only pay for a day or it could prove expensive.

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: Jessie Chaplin 1876 St Osyth
« on: Wednesday 31 October 12 09:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Pam,
 Thanks for reply.
I had seen the birth cert record but am unsure how long it will take to get here if we order it. I hadn't noticed William Livers though. now, there's a thought.
i am unsure whether Jessie is, in fact,Mahalas daughter or, if she is a Grand daughter brought up by Mahala.
Mahala would be 46 when Jessie was born which could be right although there would be a 10 year gap between her children.
I was wondering if anyone had access to the Parish records. Though I think I should order the birth cert and hope it gets here on time.
thanks again, appreciate your help.

Essex Lookup Requests / Jessie Chaplin 1876 St Osyth
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if someone could look up the baptism of Jessie Chaplin born end of 1876 in St Osyth.
She appears in the 1891 and 1881 census with, what appears to be her mother Mahala.
Now, the problem is, she was born 2 years after her 'father' died. so, she could be illegitimate or, a grand daughter of Mahala.
The plot thickens. I am asking for a friend who is off to Spain on the 11th and wont be able to order a birth certificate to get here in time.
Any help greatly appreciated as he may just explode with curiosity.

Hi again, there is a topic on here already, answered by Musketball. Re Weeley 1812-13.
He is very knowledgeble on the subject. It would appear that the barracks are  behind the present church. Covering an area of 50 acres.
Perhaps worth looking Musketball up as he seems to have a lot of info and could help more.

I have a few Wyatts from Great and Little Oakley near Wix. Eventually they went to Harwich.

I have had a quick look through and all I could find were references to a murder in Little Clacton 25/7/1806. A member of the Cameron Highlanders, Alexander McDonald, was murdered in Lt Clacton, but it says he came from Weeley Barracks. cannot see it on any of my old maps.

Not sure if this helps. In early 1800's Martello Towers were built in Clacton. In 1812, when the guns were delivered, it was decided that, due to the 'unhealthiness of the coast' the garrison of the towers should be stationed at Weeley Barracks.
Going to dig through and see if I can find anything else.

Essex / Re: Great Clacton 1871 ,were your family here?

Thank You for all your replies. I have done all I can for now and printed off quite a bit for the Local history group and passed it on to Norman Jacobs for the History room at the Library. I had to stop for a while due to ill health in the family, so , apologies for not getting back for a while. My daughter has now finished her chemo so I have a bit more free time. All good.
Phil, looks like we are related, I shall pm you details of how to contact me and i can give you quite a bit on our Family. I have most of them going back to the mid 1600's in the local area.
Richard, I am not sure if you have the Swing Rioters book, if not , let me know and I will look him up for you. There are quite a few details about him and his family in there along with physical descriptions ect.
Clacton itself began its existence in 1872 due to the railway , until that time the land was mainly farmland and great Clacton was the main village. I have a few maps showing the progression of the 'new' town.
I shall get to the local history sectionof the library in the next few weeks and see what i can find out about some of the other queries raised here, please bear with me.
Many many Thanks for all the interest in this item. Thanks you as well for your patience.

I really do appreciate the help , I would have been still trying next year as I have been popping in and out of the NA for about 5 years with no luck.
Thank You again I am so pleased.
