Laois (Queens) / Research on Deevy / Devoy of Kilmurry, Co. Laois.

Researching family roots: Deevy/Deevey/ Devoy - of Kilmurry, Co. Laois

I'm looking for help regarding my family tree. On my grandfather's marriage cert. the surname is spelt in three different ways. My grandfather Edward's name is spelt Deveay. The name Deevy is written under marriage being solemnised by the couple, and Edward's father's name is down on the cert as Thomas Deevey. This marriage took place on 26th April, 1885 in St. Catherine's Church, Dublin.

I'm looking for information on my great grandfather, Thomas Deevey. Where was he born? Did he marry in Dublin or Laois? From the baptismal records in the Parish of Portlaoise, I have found a Thomas Devoy, son of William Devoy and Eliza Whelan from Kilmurry. Thomas was born in August, 1844.
I'm wondering if this Thomas Devoy is the same person as Thomas Deevey on my grandfather's marriage cert. I would like details on this Thomas' marriage, his wife's name and when and where was Edward (son on marriage cert) born.

Yours sincerely,
Jim.

Wexford / Mary Kinsella, married in the parish/ district of Kilanerin, Co. Wexford
« on: Tuesday 22 December 15 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
I'm searching for details on Mary Kinsella, also spelt Kinsellagh. She was married in 1845 to Patrick Hagan in the parish/district of Kilanerin, Co. Wexford. From information on a tombstone, erected by Edward Hagan, in Ballyfad RC Church cemetery, she died on the 1st December 1881, aged 55 years. This would indicate that she was born around 1826. I'm looking for a lead to her date of birth or baptism, to the town land around Kilanerin in which she most likely grew up or any other relevant information.

Thanks to all of you for the trails you suggested I might follow, particularly those of gaffy and bevj. They have yielded very helpful results. I have discovered that my great grandparents were married in 1845. The spelling of both their surnames are different from those used today. I have also discovered two extra grandaunts, one whose forename is that of one of my sisters.

Thanks gaffy for your response. Your information may well be an important lead. I have checked the parish marriage records under nli. They don't cover 1845. They go from 1852 to 1880. What records were you working out of?

Thanks Bev for your response. Both of the entries you referred to, from Ballycoog and Bolabradagh have possibilities. From my information Patrick Hagan was born around 1806. His wife Mary Kinsella could have been born in 1829.
Regarding Edward being the eldest offspring, I presumed that, as he succeeded James Hegan, his father, as tenant farmer. From Gaffy's information regarding the couple from Kilanerin it is possible that there were children who died before Edward arrived. I'll research that.  :)

Thanks aghadowey for your response. I have tried a number of parishes around Arklow parish where Patrick Hagan came from, without succeess. I will continue the search.

Patrick Hagan and Mary Kinsella's first son, Edward, was baptised in Sts. Mary and Peter's Church, Arklow. They lived in Glenogue, North Wexford. Information on their marriage hopefully will tell me the parish Mary came from, hers and Patrick's parents names.

I'm also looking for information on their second son, John, baptised on June 9, 1853. From the marriage cert of Patrick Hagan, his younger brother, John was best man and lived in 2 Maxwell St. off Cork St. Dublin.

According to Griffith's Valuations (Book 1855-1938 no.10)Co. Wexford, District of Gorey, Coolgreany, James Hegan's name appears as the tenant farmer in Glenogue. There is a second Hagan family also listed in Glenogue. I'm looking for information as to the connection between the two families.
