Did William have a son called ArthurYes Arthur was my great pop. 😁
Hi Cas81
I am a great grand son of William Murray and Margaret McConn.
Maybe the answer is that Frances's maiden name was Worsfield?
jonw65 found the baptisms below for a Richard, Frances, Henry and Sarah Newnham with parents Richard and Frances, which tie in well with your Frances and Richard's children.
I can't see a marriage for a Richard Newnham to a Frances at the moment or the couple/their children in the census. If Richard and Frances never married then and the couple split the children might well have just used their mother's maiden name and she would have remarried as a spinster which ties in with the marriage to Anthony Galloway South in 1836. This would also mean that the Frances's maiden name on the birth cert you purchased was correct as well
When the children were asked their father's name at the time of their marriages they may have just said Richard and the surname was added by the clerk???Frances was born around 1806 Lewes, Sussex. She married a Richard Worsfield/Worsfold. They had 4 children. Richard, Frances, Henry and Sarah.
1841 census (ages potentially rounded down for 15+ yrs) has Richard and Frances aged 15, Henry 12, Sarah 11.
1851 census has Richard 25, Henry 22, Sarah, 19, all born Brighton. Sister Frances was married?
There are baptisms in Brighton for the children of Anthony + Frances South. But I can't see any there or elsewhere for the Worsfield children.
There are though four baptisms in Brighton with parents Richard and Frances Newman / Richard + Fanny Newnham. There doesn't appear to be any more. I am thinking that it may be the one couple, despite the slight differences, but I can't really trace any of them later to find out. Maybe they emigrated or something. Or could there be a connection to the Worsfields?
