Danish vice Welsh was a typo. The other side of my family is Welsh. There too lies an issue - how to tell the difference in DNA from Wales vice England.

Hello all, I sent messages to both of you about the Goss family.  My mother's family is/was Goss and my ggrandfather (whom I didn't know) told his students (he was a teacher) that his people were originally from Wales.  Would love to chat with you both.  My email address is included in the messages I sent you both.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Jan

Europe / Re: Muhl family B: Altona D: Hamburg looking for living relatives

Dave, thank you for responding.  I had the names of the children and the German death certs for them, but children etc I had nothing.  So you've given me more to dig into.

I've been working more on my mum's Goss line (connecting them to England/Wales) so I had taken a break from the Muhl family.

Thanks again :)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Puzzled by shared matches on Ancestry

Hello,
I would definitely upload to Gedmatch.com.  I was looking for relatives in Ireland/England and on Gedmatch I found one (I looked at email addresses from the UK)... so I emailed one.  Then I found out he had a tree on ancestry and we showed up as a match WAY down the line (which I expected).  SO we are pretty darn sure we're related, just not sure how YET.... but we're working on it and sharing some crazy family stories to pass the time :)

Europe / Muhl family B: Altona D: Hamburg looking for living relatives
« on: Monday 01 January 18 00:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have three children born in Altona that all died in Hamburg and I am looking for living relatives of those children. They are the children of an Andreas Nicolaus Muhl and Catharina Marie(a) Junge Muhl

1) Emilie Margaretha Henriette Muhl
B: 23Oct1868 D: 27Oct1915 Mrd: Believe a Schonberg

2) Julius Heinrich Friedrich Muhl
B: 8Mar1873 D: 11Dec1942 Mrd: I believe Marie Louise Blohm

3) Wilhelm Johan Jacob Muhl
B: 5Aug1876 D: 22May1946 Hamburg Mrd: I believe Johanna Marie Clara Blohm

They had at least one step-brother Theodore Muhl B: 1866 whose mother died at his birth or shortly there-after. Theodore immigrated to New York around the age of 18 leaving his half siblings in Altona.

I do not read German without a translator and appreciate ANY help anyone can give me.  I want to be able to reach out to any living relatives in Hamburg or even if any immigrated to the United States.

Thanks in advance,
Jan A

Rumor has it that my g grandfather was born or from Altona, Germany.  Even with searches on ancestry and family search shows boy Muhl and doesn't even list his first name (his mother died giving birth to him or shortly after that). :(

Hi!
If you would like some help, please  provide gedmatch kit #s and where I can find you on ancestry.com.

I love a good mystery.  I have found MANY mysteries in my family tree as that my father's mother's side had a "Diehl" in it and when my grandmother had an affair and created my father..it appears that about 1/8th of the Diehl families have also done so... I am having fun "isolating" family branches to narrow down how people are related.

shhhh I better watch it - WE may be related  ha ha ha

Wow, I think I'd be more worried about the handling/shipping/fees than the results :(

I have both mine and my brother's dna samples checked on ancestry.com and there is a slight variance between our samples and that is to be expected.  Because of the X and Y chromosomes there are some traits that will be passed down on JUST the male side of the family.

I was hoping that there was more difference between the countries but I also understand why there is so much "fudge room" on these:  My great grandfather was SUPPOSEDLY born in Germany and immigrated to New York.  HOWEVER, the town he was BORN in was under Welsh rule and by the time he immigrated (about 18 years later) it was under German rule.  So when people say he was from Germany - it makes me wonder.

My DNA would/does confirm he was Welsh and NOT German.  Until I find actual paperwork etc, I am taking it with a grain of salt but do tend to lean to the Welsh side.
