Great News! I have just obtained a copy of the Will of Nicholas Maughan (1800-1878) of Newbrough Hall. In it he says that John Nicholas is his only ("reputed") son and that Jane Simm, his housekeeper, was John Nicholas' mother. I have found John Nicholas Simm in the June quarter of the BMD indices for 1847, which I am sure is the correct person.
Interesting is that, when John Nicholas was just 4 years old, at the time of the 1851 census, Jane Simm was still living at Newbrough Hall as Nicholas' housekeeper, but John Nicholas was not there. I have not been able to find him anywhere on the 1851 census. Perhaps one of you may have more luck?
Best wishes
Richard
