"These are the only Duncan deaths I can find which go up to 1999"  Pampoen, would this index represent all deaths registered throughout S.A.. I had managed to find this, but was unsure of its inclusions . .

Thanks for your note re spelling of Joscelyne which will be useful should the daughter apply for this document.

Scribble, thanks for the tip re British Embassy, I haven't seen this any where else, we'll look at avenues for contacting them.

Many thanks both, odessa.

South Africa / Thomas Irwin Duncan
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Born 4 DEC 1917 to George & Mary Robson Duncan (nee Irwin). Known to have travelled extensively in South Africa from around 1970 onwards, possibly Pietermaritzburg, Jo'burg or Cape Town He may have worked in Sports Clubs. He may have divorced an Irene Jocelyn Chatfield/Tatham/Duncan c.1971 ( a 2nd marriage) but is believed to have had another partner after this date.
A daughter from his first marriage would like to confirm his date of death, which is rumoured to be 1997.
I have tried various of the recommended web-sites with no success, but admit to having no experience with S.A. research at all.
Would be happy for any suggestions of routes of inquiry we can undertake before making official application with so little evidence.

regards,
odessa.

Boo

Thanks so much for confirmation on registration districts. I suspect the 1907 entry may well be worth looking at, as indeed Thomas Robson with wife Sarah Jane were resident at 48 John Street in 1911.

It also may be possible to try the burial registers first (a little less expensive!) to see if a street address is given as place of death.

"Robson" is a tricky name to research in the north-east  ;)

Thanks again, odessa

Northumberland / ROBSON, Ann b.abt 1827 Ryton

I'm hoping for some advice please. I usually research in Cheshire, so I am not very familiar with your area and registration districts. Ann Robson(single woman, sometimes enumerated as a widow) b.abt 1827(Ryton or Greenside) was last seen on the 1901CR at 48 John Street, Gosforth, she then lived with one of her sons Thomas Robson aged 38. By 1911 Thomas is living at the same address, but has now married. Since Ann Robson doesn't appear to be on the 1911CR at all, I was expecting to find a death registration 1901-1911 in the Castle Ward - would this be correct if she died at her last known address? If she was buried in this area would All Saints, Gosforth or St Nicholas, Gosforth be a likely burial place, or was there a municipal cemetery available at this time?

There are quite a few Ann Robson's registered with in this time frame, so I am just hoping to narrow down the odds a little before having to decide to look for a church record or pay for several death certificates from other registration districts.

Amberly,

There's a marriage that may be worth considering, again at Tarvin, 25 APR 1773 Thomas Betwizel to Rachel Firat/Sirat.

There's also baptisms for 2 more children to this couple. I wonder if the name has corrupted over several generations, as it appears that neither the bride or groom could sign their names. My thoughts that Betwizel, could have been the more familiar Birtwisle, well known in Cheshire, and I believe could quite easily have been corrupted into Boswell - but that's for you to ponder.

A Thomas Betwesell son of Thomas & Rachel of Kelsall was baptised 30 AUG 1780 at Tarvin.

You can see it on Familysearch and/or if you use any of the other subscription search sites. FindMyPast will give you the original entry.

Hope this helps,

It's possible that Thomas and Rachel Boswell were buried at Tarvin - if you haven't already seen this.

Were any of Thomas & Mary's children baptised at St Helen's, Witton?

On the marriage entry the groom's surname looks more like BARSWELL. It sounds like there could be a lot of variants for this name. Can you substantiate the surname from any other documents?

odessa.

The Boswell that was buried 12 NOV 1861 at Witton, his parents were Thomas & Rachel Boswell of Kelsall.
