London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Family of Samuel and Margaret (Mead) Smith
« on: Monday 11 December 17 06:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Penny,

We've communicated before.  And you've pointed out some of the errors on my ancestry.ca page, and thank you for that.  I agree that many people 'copy' (I've done that as well), but an additional problem is that ancestry gives people too many repeated 'hints' for anyone that one has listed in their genealogy.  So for William Smith and Samuel Smith in London (18th century) many people use similar 'hints' in various ways in their own genealogy.  At any rate I'm taking on a London based genealogist to help me find the appropriate 'Smith' families in London.

And I looked for JP Pruden's website to find information about Samuel, Margaret (Mead), and Margaret.  I use those dates as a result.  But to make the point once again, moments ago I received another "hint" for Samuel Smith (1725) marrying a Margaret "Hoy".

And I did find a marriage record for a William Smith and a Margaret "Pemble", but I've sent it to the genealogist for verification.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: William Smith family 1796 - 1812

Hi 'smithresearcher', Blotwulf, and Peedee

I think I've exchanged emails with each of you, but I still seem to be lost in finding the correct ancestors of William (Robert) Smith (1797, Lambeth).  There are many leads but each follows different possibilities.

First, William Robert's father was just 'William', not 'William Hart'. Second, WR's father was associated with the Company of Paviors as a 'gardener' and received his 'Freedom of the City' acceptance in May of 1805, and became a "Gentleman".  On that document he notes that his father is "William of Peckham, labourer".  However, finding records for someone named 'William Smith' who was labourer in Peckham, Surrey is rather difficult. But I'm still looking!

Also, rather than focusing on the name 'Hart', I think we should focus on the name 'Pemble'.  William Robert gave several of his children the second name of Pemble, but no one can understand why given that HBC has no record of a 'Pemble' working for them.  In fact, WR's first son who died as an infant around Lesser Slave Lake c. 1818, was the first child to be given the name 'Joseph Pemble Smith'.

So all I have to offer is that I 'finally' found a marriage record for "William Smith, widower, and Mary Pemble, spinster" in 1782 in Kent.  If anyone would like to see it, send me an email - barb.vanhaute@gmail.com
