Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1901 Liverpool - Mcdonald/Irvin

Hi Emily

Many thanks for that  - I am happy to say I managed to track down Elizabeth a while back now in Liverpool and the barrow in furness thing was a red herring!  I haven't been to rootschat since the summer.  However I am still looking to trace her father James Irvin married to a margaret who was a fireman born Ireland - he died sometime between 1881 and 1901

Merry xmas to you too :-)

Thanks so much! See pm for further thanks.  Do you know anyone with access to census records of 1851 at all?  James Irvin is very enigmatic figure and I have had terrible trouble tracing him - I was wondering whether firemen of that time were listed anywhere in offical records?  I am also having trouble tracing the place in Ireland where the Irvins heralded from - have tried all usual bmd sites - can you recommend any Irish sites which might be able to help?

Hi Kazza

Sorry for delay in responding.  Year 1871 - all I have is Irvin (possibly with an 'e' on the end) and name Margaret aged 28.  Son George born scotland so in 1871 she and her husband possibly in either belfast or glasgow.  Mother's maiden name was Nesbitt (if that helps).  Keen to find husband and his birthplace.

Thanks so much!
:-)

Hi Judy

Perhaps he was a trainee sailor - I have come across that before.  Also if this Henry is the right one, then it could explain why Madeline wasn't living with him - he may have been at sea and she could have lived with relatives?

Just a thought

Hi Judy

I can see what I can do although I only have access to local records via the library family history centre and they largely cover the Lewes area.

Looking at your census records I am a bit confused.  If Madeline's father was Henry - wouldn't he be listed in the 1891?  Could it be maybe the 1891 Elphicks are a different family?

Found this in 1881 census - is this Madeline's father?
Ellen ELPHICK   Head   W   Female   39   London, Middlesex, England   Shopkeeper
Henry ELPHICK   Son      Male   16   Northfleet, Kent, England
 William ELPHICK   Son      Male   15   Frindsbury, Kent, England   Rivett Boy
 Walter ELPHICK   Son      Male   13   Rochester, Kent, England   Errand Boy

Looks like the mother is from London so that may explain why Madeline is born there in 1891.

Is this her birth record?
Surname  First name(s)  Age  District  Vol  Page

~~~~~~~~
Births Mar 1891
~~~~~~~~

Elphick  Madeline Lily    Camberwell  1d 904

Is this Henry's birth record?

Births Sep 1864
ELPHICK  Henry     Hastings  2b 29
 ~~~~~~~~
If that is him, then this is from the 1901 census:
Henry Elphick  35 Sussex Hastings Hastings St Mary In The Castle Boatman
Also found this which may be of interest:
In 1881  - "H M S St Vincent" Henry ELPHICK           U   15    M   Hastings, Sussex, England   Boy 2nd Class
He is listed as a "student".
