Hi Wendy
I was looking at your family names and see that many of them are from Hampshire. Strangely, I was also looking for a photo of St.Stephen's to illustrate an article about a couple from Hampshire who also got married there even though they both lived in Andover. I haven't solved that one, yet.
I agree, it's very satisfying when you find that photo.
Good luck with your research.

Hi Wendy
As you posted your request in 2011 I expect that you've already found this photo of the church with a better resolution than the one that was originally mentioned. But just in case: http://britisharchitects.weebly.com/jarvis-henry.html

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Retreat, Clapham
« on: Wednesday 16 November 16 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
The 1841 census has my family living in Retreat, Clapham.  Checking online it appears that this may have been a lunatic asylum, but the list of inhabitants covers several pages, with families and employed people included.

Can anyone help me with info about Retreat?

The census ref is HO 107/1053/7 and the names are James, wife Ann and children William, Henry & George Bushnell.  Also can anyone tell me what the initials in the employment column mean - looks like F S.  James was a coachman.

Many thanks

Christine

Hi Christine
I know this is a long time since your query but just in case you're still looking there were some houses called Waterloo Retreat in Clapham. The houses were tucked down Waterloo Place. Sadly the area was redeveloped and Waterloo Retreat disappeared. This link should take you to a photo in Wandsworth Archives boroughphotos.org/wandsworth/waterloo-retreat-c1900

Hi Richard
I tried to attach the map but was unable to do so for some reason (I'm a bit of a novice on Rootschat procedures). As you say Bromells Road starts at the same place on The Pavement but originally curved down to the High Street at the eastern end. Bromell's Buildings (plural) was, despite its name, a road not a building. At the apex of the curve in Bromell's Road Bromell's Buildings sprang in a north-easterly direction. Sadly it no longer exists.

Hi Roseanne and Richard.
I was looking for Bromwell's Terrace and saw your messages. Bromwell's Road is completely different today from the 1890s not least because it takes a different direction. Bromwell's Buildings (a separate road) no longer exists. Go to free site http://maps.nls.uk and put in Clapham, London. Choose map OS 25inch 1890s-1920s.  Both roads are near The Pavement, Clapham Common. A button allows you to see an annotated aerial view underneath. Very clever.  There are a few images online at Wandsworth Archives of places in Bromwell Buildings. http://boroughphotos.org/wandsworth.

Hi Stangat
There are two photos of Dunn's Court in 'Forgotten Hull 2' by Graham Wilkinson, Kingston Press. It could be out of print but you may be able to order it via the inter-library service.
Cheers, Lotherington
