Berkshire / Re: Berkshire marriage licences
« on: Saturday 09 July 22 16:34 BST (UK)  »
The FamilySearch film is of a later index of the Berkshire Archdeaconry licence records. It's not clear if both bonds and allegations survived until the destruction in WWII. The index records the names of both parties and parishes of residence. They do not contain additional information that would have been on the licensing records.

This can at least confirm where the licence would have been issued, even if the bond/allegation is no longer extant. There is a very small folder of bonds that survive for Berkshire. These are likely bonds that somehow made their way into other collections. There are only a small handful of these, so most no longer survive.

Surrey / Burials - Newington
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for where there might be burials in the St Mary Newington/Newington Butts area of Surrey in the period 1800-1850. I have a death on 25th January 1850 of a Mary Trent that I can't find a burial for. I'm also searching for her husband... he would have likely died pre-1841 and was names William or John.

Does anybody have any ideas about where burial were taking place for this area of Surrey at the time?

Many thanks!

Have you ruled out the John Storey buried 27 Jan 1819 Tynemouth age 37, abode Poor House.
(FreeREG)

Thank you for this. No I have not ruled this one out... it looks like a wider investigation into Storey's may be needed as I have started by widening my search.

Do you know if there are Workhouse records that may help determine who this John was? Admission/discharge, religious creed documents etc.

Thank you again.

Hi Richard,
That first link you have given goes to a private tree.
Second link works fine. I was curious and checked it out as I have Storey ancestors. Two of the kits you manage match my brother whose kit I manage, but not through our respective Storeys  :) We have chatted to each other on Ancestry previously.

Hi,

The first link should hopefully work as the tree is now public.

Could you let me know how we connect so I can work out who you are from our DNA matches? By private message is fine if needed.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I have a tricky Storey bunch (seems a common name) that I've made some progress on in the last couple of years.

John Storey born c.1821 in Chirton was son of John Storey and Margaret Dobson (sister of the famous architect John Dobson). I have DNA links to the Dobson family and John Storey is found with remarried mother, Margaret Price in 1841.

Margaret Dobson (1797-1884) married John Storey on 24 Oct 1815 at Tynemouth - I have an image from the BT's. The two witnesses were Margaret's siblings so no help there in identifying John.

Margaret remarried to John Price on 19 Jan 1825 at South Shields. She is listed as a widow.

I am unable to find a death for John Storey Snr.

I also have a confusing DNA match... The match's grandmother was Agnes Storey b.1886 South Shields, daughter of James Brown Storey b.1854 and Elizabeth Jane Saunders b.1857. I believe I have accurately traced James Brown Storey's line back as follows:

Parents: George Gibson Storey b.1831 Gateshead m. Mary Brown b.1834 South Shields
Grandparents: John Storey b.1807 Swalwell baptised at Whickham m. Jane Gibson b.1808 Howden.
Great Grandparents: George Storey b.1782 Whickham m. Elizabeth Gardner b.1785 Gateshead.

This is where I think... Aha! Maybe George is brother of *MY* John Storey... so I carry on tracing the line...

George Storey's parents are: John Storey d. 1795 Swalwell bur. Whickham and he married a Mary.

This John Storey and Mary had the following  children (including George) that I have been able to find - all baptised at Whickham:
Isabel b.1780
Catherine b.1785
John b.1787
Ann b.1790

Aha! A sibling named John at around the right date for Margaret Dobon's  husband!
HOWEVER: This John seems to have lived past 1825 and married Sarah Lumley on 25 Aug 1810 at St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne and potentially died in 1869 in Gateshead.

The DNA match shares 70cm with my great aunt. John Storey Snr is my great aunts Great Great Grandfather.
Three of the shared matches (excluding her grandson) have common ancestors as John Storey b.1821 Chirton and his wife Elizabeth Hewitt (from Cumberland).

I'm still at a loss of trying to find my John Storey's birth (b.1821) and a record of John Storey Snr's death (d. before 1825?) and parents.

My Tree: John Storey b.1821 - https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/8499087/person/-940511891/facts

Any help appreciated!

Many thanks,

Richard

Thank you... I'm wondering if he's in the burial records of Greenwich Hospital as he was an out-pensioner who was not long discharged as an in-pensioner for misconduct. The death certificate states he was a Greenwich Pensioner however he went by the name John Dunmore whilst a Royal Marine. An application for one of his children to Greenwich Hospital School reads Ma (which is crossed out) followed by John Dunmore. Another application reads John Buyrn Dunmore.

I didn't get chance to check the registers at my last visit to The National Archives... I was chasing down a lot of other people - him included!

Wow thank you  so much! I've been trying to find her burial!

Yes, she died of cholera... there was a pandemic.

Are you magically able to find one for a Matthew/Mathew Burn/s who died 29 Sep 1846 at Greenwich Union Workhouse? I can't find him in the usual places.

Her maiden name was Warren.

She married a Royal Marine in East Stonehouse, Devon who was going by the name John Dunmore although was born Matthew Buyrn.

There’s a baptism in Paignton, Devon in 1797... illegitimate - mother Susanna Warren.

There doesn’t seem to be any other matches in Devon. I haven’t managed to link up any DNA matches apart from one descendant of her son.

Her son William Dunmore b.1826 East Stonehouse was a merchant seaman and I have a little about him but no idea where he ends up or if he starts using a variation of the name Buyrn like the other children.

A daughter Mary Jane leaves her husband and married again becoming Mary Jane Dunn but her husband deserts her - she’s in Bethnal Green settlement records but I can’t find her after then either.

It’s a tricky family.
