The Common Room / RootsChat Personal Messages and Photographs
« on: Friday 05 November 21 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping to attach a couple of very old photos in a PM to another RootsChat user, but it seems that this is not possible in a personal message. Could anyone confirm if that is correct or if there is another way to attach an image in a PM, please?

Hi KJMStudio,

Thank you for your message. Sorry for the delay in my response. I've just noticed it, because the email notification went to my junk mail. My great grandfather Otto Wright was the brother of Lucy Gilmore Wright. Their mother Susannah Wright had five children (Otto, William, Kate, Lucy and Roland). They all took their mother's surname (which was her maiden name), as she wasn't married when she had the children. My mum has always known that her grandfather Otto's parents were never married, but we didn't know much else (apart from some very basic details about Otto's father's background). Susannah is quite a mysterious figure and research has been quite challenging. On one of the census records, Susannah describes herself as the children's sister. On my great grandfather's birth certificate, Susannah gave the father's surname as Wright, but that isn't the case. She gives her maiden name as Smith and her married name as Wright on his birth certificate. Otto's father was a man called Otto Johannes Herrlich. However, I suspect that he was not Lucy's father due to the 'Gilmore' name, but he very well could be. To be honest, I suspect that the name 'Abel Wright' is probably a red herring either way. The census records suggest that Susannah lived very near to her sister and brother-in-law (the Dukes) for a while, who probably helped her with the children and I remember finding out that there was a Gilmore family living near to her at some point. Susannah moved around alot (according to the census records), but usually within the Surrey area. I'll have a look at the information I have over the next few days and I'll get back to you. I also have some photos of Otto as a young man. I'll try and send a private message via RootChat. It has been a while since I've used it.

Thanks again for your message,
Sarah

Hi Michelle,

I started this thread. Welcome to RootsChat. I'm fairly new to it myself. I'll send you a PM from here, if possible.

Thank you for the street addresses and also; thank you for pointing out Zwanck's academic title etc. This would make sense, as I understood them to be seemingly quite a 'middle class' family.

Sarah.

Thank you black.betty and Rudolph.

Thank you black.betty for offering to translate this for me and thank you for your time. That's so kind of you.

Yes, I'm interested to find out more about Karl August Herrlich. I don't know much about his family or his brothers and sisters, so it would be nice to find out more. I know that Karl and Bertha had quite a lot of children and I know their children's names, but I don't know about Karl's siblings.

I know that Otto was born in Stettin, but for some reason, I didn't recognise this as the place name on the document, which I mistakenly thought began with an 'N'. Thank you both Betty and Rudolph for your help with this and thank you for telling me about Karl Herrlich's connection to shipping. I did not know about this. Coincidently, I also have an English ancestor from the north east of England who was a ship's agent / broker around this period of time.

I look forward to hearing from you black.betty. Thank you for all you help.

Sarah.

Hello black.betty,

Thank you very much for posting this marriage certificate. That was very kind of you. I'm uncertain how to access such German records myself. This is really fascinating and it reveals information that I did not know, so thank you.

I didn't know that Emilie's parents were called Gottlieb Heinrich Zwanck and Sophie Henriette (born Becker) Zwanck, although I knew that Emilie's maiden name was Zwanck. I don't speak much German and my German is rather 'rusty'. Some of the handwriting on the document is hard to read, so I wonder if anyone could help me understand or confirm some information, please?

The marriage certificate states that Otto was born in 1841, which I knew. At the beginning of it, the date of the marriage is stated. The words at the end of the date are handwritten. Is it 1889 or 1884 or another date? It looks as though it could be 1881, but this is a bit earlier than I believed him to have been married.

Before the words 'Sohn de' (Son of) Karl August Herrlich and Bertha (born Bertha Weber), there are two handwritten words, written before the name Karl. Could anyone tell me what these two words are, please? It then states that Karl and Bertha are 'Wohnhaft zu' (resident in) a place that begins with an 'N', I think. Could anyone tell me what this might be, please? Lastly, in terms of Otto's details; before the printed word 'Religion’, there is long handwritten word. Could anyone tell me what this word is, please?

I know that I have a lot of questions, but even if just one or two could be answered, that would be great.

Thank you,
Sarah.
