Christine,
As far as I know, in 1871 they lived in Chirton, North Shields and at this point the census states Mary from Blyth as William Dye's wife.
In 1881 census, they lived at 69 Prosperous Street, Longbenton, though I cannot find this road name now. Their son William was 8 at this time, and records say he was born in Longbenton, so it's possible they married in Longbenton.
I did find a marriage record for a William "Day" in 1873 Oct-Nov-Dec Newcastle upon Tyne to either Mary Toole or Mary Ann Jones. This matches with William Dye Jnr's birth in 1873 but not the 1871 census, though it's possible they lied about being married in the 1871, I of course am speculating here.
What's also interesting, I found a birth certificate for William Dye listed as William Gills in 1873 Oct-Nov-Dec Gateshead, but of course we know that Mary Ann Gills died in 1867 so that's another confusing point. It is also very likely incorrect, mainly because the record is Gateshead rather than Tynemouth.
