Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Rootschat Newby

Hi Clemie,

Sorry to hear of loss and hope time is helping to heal the sorrow.

I've not been tracing this line of the much but since last I posted I stumbled across a Vaux in an article on the Pocklington History site (Pocklington being in Yorkshire where my G. grandfather was born).

http://www.pocklingtonhistory.com/archives/people/emigration/michiganemigrants/index.php

It appears that this Vaux line were from Huegenot descent arriving from France probably in the 18th Century rather than from Norman Conquest. This being the case then there may be different Vaux family lines.

All the best

Michael

Regards - Michael

And so, several years later....

Hi Chrissie, I see you're interested in Durham Lowthers. See if you can see this link below. My Mother's paternal line are Lowthers all from County Durham. I've added to GGGGFather but have yet to add their siblings. I'll do so when I get chance.

Regards - Michael

My be a long shot (I'm a Hardie) but my line traces back to Glasgow then to Northern Ireland. The surname adapted from Hargy / Hargey to Hardie when they moved to Scotland.

Re: your interest in Vaux. I have Vaux ancestors from Pocklington in Yorkshire (my G. Grandfather). He moved to Witton Patk, County Durham working in the mines. I'm still researching so don't have too much info to share yet.

Hi I'm Michael, G. Grandson of Nancy Douthart from N Ireland. Her Mother's name was Jane Douthart (nee Hargy). Nancy Douthart married my G. Grandfather Neil Hargy /Hardie; they were second cousins.

Jane Douthart (nee Hargy) Married Henry Douthart (my G.G. Grand Parents.

Nancy and Neil lived in 39 Charles St, Glasgow and according to the 1901 census had Nancy's sister living with them at the time Minnie Douthart.

In the 1881 Census Nancy and Neil were living at Duke Street.

Jane Douthart was a Hargy (Hargy) from the Ballymoney area of C. Antrim.

Jane's parents were Neil Hargy and Nancy Anderson (again N Ireland)

Neil Hargy's parents were James Hargy b1780 and Helen McNichol.

Neil's brother James is the father of the Neil (my G. Grandfather) who married Nancy Douthart (the second cousin). Both Neil and James were Stonemasons apparently.

James b 1780 was the son of Patrick Hargy b circa 1750.

The Hargy's and Doutharts all trace back to what's now Northern Ireland around the Ballymoney area.

The Hargy's may well be of Huguenot origin possibly France.

(Acknowledgement to my Father's Second Cousin in Oz)

Hi, Just stumbled across this thread as I'm just re-starting my searches on this side of my family.

The side by side map is spot on.

My G. Grandmother was born at Seldom Seen, Newfield in 1877. I gather it was just a row of small cottages virtually on the banks of the wear as the old map shows - nothing much more. There was a colliery / coking plant across the River which could be accessed via 'ford' type crossing at low water. Very poor conditions. I saw a map from around 1950 and it showed just remnants of the cottages after that date the maps show nothing.

My G Grandmother's birth name was Isabel Simpson by the way and her father was Joseph Simpson.
