Thanks, everyone. I appreciate your input.

My grandparents raised me after my mum and dad died when I was 12 and they've always been very loving to me and have always supported me and helped me with my family history research. Never before have they had a problem with me contacting distant relations, so I guess they probably have a good reason for their anger now. They're both elderly now and not in the best of health, so I'm just going to apologise to them and explain what happened and then leave it at that.

I have lots of distant relations and at least some of them must be traceable, so it isn't such a big loss anyway.

Thanks again

Long story short: I contacted my great uncle on Facebook and my grandparents went off on one when I told them. Something to do with a very old family rift and a will being contested. I'm now in the doghouse, but the saddest thing is that my grandparents are very nervous about the reappearance of this man in our lives. I'm actually worried about their blood pressure! They're really stressed out. I had no idea of this rift...I'm 20 now and this all happened before I was born.

I've now blocked this great uncle of mine, which I'm saddened about as I would love to get to know him...

Anyone had similar experiences?

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Look up request for Samuel SCOTT
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 23:54 GMT (UK)  »
Samuel SCOTT was baptised on October 29, 1815 in Middlewich, Cheshire. He married Elizabeth WHISTON on June 7, 1838, in Prestwich, Lancashire. They had 3 daughters together.

Samuel's parents were called Samuel and Mary - please can someone help me find a marriage record for them? Mary's maiden name has become a brick wall

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Look up request for Dinah ELSON
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 01:15 GMT (UK)  »
looking for a birth record for Dinah ELSON who married Edward ORTON at St Michael's, Coventry, Warwickshire on 13th September, 1836.

According to census records she was born around 1811. Her birth place is transcribed as both BRAMOTE and BEAMCOTT.

Any help at all is very much appreciated

I assume she must have told him. It could be that the stepfather William THOMAS reminded him that he wasn't his. Even the occupation was roughly correct - I suppose valet sounded better than footman. Anyway, I think you are on the correct trail now. I've enjoyed looking for this one!

Thanks so much for all of your help! :) :)

Edward ORTON married Dinah ELSON at St Michael's Coventry 13 Sep 1836. John ORTON's birth was registered Dec qtr 1842 Foleshill & Sowe district, mother's maiden name shown as ELLSON.

Thank you! As you say, there seems to have been a few John ORTON's born around that date and around that area.

I find it interesting that my John Thomas HORTON names his father on his marriage certificate, and chose to use (an approximation of) his surname when he grew up, rather than his stepfather's surname. I'm thinking that his mother Sarah must have told John Thomas HORTON who his dad was?

That certainly looks promising. If you obtain the birth certificate it 'may' (but probably not) name the father.
Olive went on to run the Three Elms pub in Brixham - does that ring a bell with your Dad? As you have FindMyPast - look up the 1939 entries for John T Horton 1862 and the various children shown in 1891.

Hi, Dad says his dad used to go to the Three Elms to visit Olive :)

It's possible but hard to prove. However, the fact that the birthdate in the parish register is 25 or 26 (I can't make my mind up regarding 5 vs 6) April 1862 which sort of tallies with the mariner records of 24 April does tend to lean that way.

Bingo!

1861 census

Sarah POPE, born in Brixham in 1838, is working as a kitchen maid at Ansty Hall in Warwickshire alongside a footman who goes by the name of John ORTON.

So I suppose the story is:

Sarah goes away to work as a servant, is impregnated by the footman, returns home to Devon to have her illegitimate baby who she names John Orton Pope, and then she marries another man and has several legitimate children with him.
