Thank you for all your help so far. You have taken me back further than I have been before so am very grateful for that but just wish we could fill in the gaps in Frederick's early life.
The search goes on..............If I find anything will update you.

Thanks had not heard that one before. If you are still doing your tree and need any assistance I would be pleased to help where I could.

William's Great Grandfather was my Great Grand Uncle. Did he ever mention or know why some Bones changed the spelling to Bownes ?

Hi Lisa

Where do you fit into the Bones/Bownes tree ?

Agree. William senior looks right but wonder why Frederick's birth does not appear anywhere?
At the moment his first 43 years are a complete mystery. As he married a widow late in life I suspect he too must have been married before but again I can find no record of this.

Nannyj you have told me something I did not know. So maybe the Smiths next door are relevant.
Never knew his fathers name so perhaps will try that name in Henny.
Thank you so much.

According to FreeBMD he married Emma Hervey so probably not. I notice a family of Smith's next door but that may just be by chance.
If you look at that census it states born in Woodham Mortimer but in later ones it says Great Henny.
But you are correct in saying no Fredericks baptised in Henny. Have been to Church there and is a wonderful remote place and churchyard full of Humms. Can't just be chance.

Hi All

Thanks for info so far. The London one is interesting but can't believe that a Countryman and Farm Labourer all his life would pitch up in London making hats for a short spell. However there are not many Fredericks to choose from. In the 1851 his sister Emma Smith is living with his Family aged 12 born Woodham Mortimer. Can't explain why his sister is called Smith.
