Cork / GALGEY family of Cork City
« on: Sunday 16 February 20 08:44 GMT (UK)  »
If you're researching this name in Cork City please get in touch/reply to this thread.

I'm descended from Penelope Galgey b1810, daughter of Richard Galgey, chandler.

It's a very rare surname and all the Galgeys of Cork City appear related, although exactly how is still a little out of grasp.

Cork / Are there any useful OFF line resources for Cork City, particularly pre-1835?
« on: Sunday 16 February 20 08:41 GMT (UK)  »
Indexed or unindexed, of any description.

I feel sure I've scoured all on-line resources for my family of interest (Galgey) and I'm missing key parts of the story to tie everyone together.

Are there any off-line resources that would be worth engaging someone to access them?

Hello debbda

I don't know if life has intervened or if you didn't receive my last two PMs, but I know have a hard copy photo of William John Godfrey, as well as a couple of other photos of his family. These were given to me by his grandson John Grunnell.

I'm happy to post to anyone who is descendant.

I haven't got around to scanning them yet, but when I do I will attach it to his wikitree profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Godfrey-2737

Jill, I checked out some of your other posts and there were some musicians amongst my 19th century Dorney's too. All Cork based though.

I'm descended from an Edward Dorney (not the one mentioned) who had family in Clonmel and may have been born there. Similar timeframe.

I'll let you know more Jill once I know you're still active here.

Australia / Re: Louisa White, "Commissioner for minors", 1847 marriage

Now, that's interesting. And I'm so impressed that you know that, because every couple of years for a decade or more I've tried researching the title and come up blank.

So the role of Commissioner was a hat put on by an official at a certain time? and presumably it's no evidence that her parents were passed away, just not present, as it's not a guardianship role?

Do you know what age precisely was underage?

Many, many thanks.

Wow, now that is a good link.

They were married in a Congregationalist ceremony, which may or may not increase the difficulty, but at least I've got somewhere to start.

Thank you!

(Still interested in hearing about QLD resources, if anyone else is reading)

Australia / Non-registry Brisbane birth records for 1860s, Annie Mary Hill
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 04:39 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody have experience with non-registry birth records for Queensland?

I have an ancestor, Annie Mary Hill, born ca 1865, with her birthplace given variously as Queensland, Brisbane or Breakfast Creek. Age estimates point consistently to about 1865.

Her parents aren't given on her marriage certificate nor her death certificate. She married in Sydney in 1889 where she was working as a servant. The witnesses were her parents-in-law, so no clues there. She was a spinster, so Hill is her birth name

I'm hoping there may an index of (non-Catholic) baptisms I can look at. I live in Brisbane, and can get to the State Library or to a diocesan office if someone can lead me to hope that might be a fruitful course.

(I should note there is one possible weak match in the registry index, but I'm pretty sure I've tracked that person through to marriage, although I need a certificate to definitively rule them out).
