Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / LOST SWANSEA FAMILY.
« on: Monday 02 August 10 07:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi...Have decided to take the 'back road route' in trying to trace lost family in Swansea.I am looking for decendants of William Morgan(Boilermaker) born1852,Swansea & Elizabeth Jones born 1854 Swansea..On 1881/1891 census, family lived at Tudor Court, Swansea and Watkins St, Swansea(Townhill area?)..1901/1911 shows half the family in Cardiff while other members married and stayed in Swansea..Children of William &Elizabeth were Mary 1872,Carrie1874,Kate1877,Madeline1878(my GGrandmother)Alice Ann 1880,Susannah 1885,William1888,Charles1891,Beatrice1893, all born in Swansea...I know details of Carrie,Madeline and Susannah as these girls married and lived in Cardiff...and I know Kate married Thomas Lewis in Swansea in 1897 and lived at Byron Crescent,Swansea on 1911 census..Beatrice also shows in 1911 living in Cardiff with her widowed mother Elizabeth..Elizabeth had 15 children in all and 9 survived...I have been trying to research this family for so long but with surnames likes Morgan/Jones it does seem nigh on impossible..I would love to know more about William and Elizabeth and decendants of their children who stayed in Swansea...Any help will be greatly recieved. Many Thanx...Nicmatt

Thanks everyone for hints and tips!!!  the surname differs on most census from melin, melian,McLean, then Melean....as I said my 'Otto' is elusive!!! but i'll keep searching around and eventually find out about him...And for 'flowerbd20, all the census have him listed as 'british subject'..He married an Irish girl and I dont know who his parents were....(only 2 names on his christening details  of otto melin and hannah janeson) but not sure how correct these details are.... any further hints and tips will always be much appreciated...

Europe / Elusive Norweigan GGgrandfather....

Hi,Can anyone point me in the right direction looking for my Norweigan gggrandfather  Otto Melin a mariner........I have a copy of his marriage cert from Ireland where he married one Honorah Coleman in 1875. I can trace him and Honorah forward from Ireland to Wales and the family that decended from them, but would love to know about Otto....On 1881/1891/1901 Wales census he was born  c.1853 in Tonsberg Vestfold Norway, and was a British Subject ....the marr cert just gives his father as 'Otto Melin' too.......However I feel that this may not have been the correct spelling of the surname! It later got 'changed' to Melean...which has stayed thru the years..As Otto married an Irish girl would he still have had to have been 'naturalized'???(My other gggrandfather from Italy did even tho he married a English girl) I have some info from previous requests in which Otto states that his mother was'Hannah Janesen'....i have scoured numerous avenues online but all to no avail....Please.. would anyone  know how I can start taking this  brick wall down...many thanks.....

Hi Brendan.....Thanks for your reply.....I have a copy of a marriage cert for Honorah Coleman and Otto Melin..it is very faded but these are the details listed....April 20th 1875 marriage solemnized at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Passage West in the registar's district of Carrigaline in the union of Cork in the county of Cork....Otto Melin age 'full'.... bachelor....seaman....residence at time of marriage Passage West.... Father Otto Melin........Honorah Coleman age 'full'.... spinster..... no occ......residence at time of marriage Passage West.... Father John Coleman(both fathers occupations are blank due to being faded) both Otto and Honorah signed with x...and it is witnessed by Owen Sullivan and Kate Steele.......I also know that Otto had and adult christening the day before his marriage in the same Catholic Chapel....I know that otto was born in Tonsberg,Vestfold Norway apprx1853(from later census in cardiff)I recieved a 'database sheet' from  a Frank Thompson via ancestry message boards which lists all the marriages/christenings from the Chapel from 1863/1879...lots and lots of 'colemans' listed...I would love to know more about the Coleman's from Ireland and have just recently ordered a microfiche from the LDS for Carrigaline/Passage West church records...Any help tho from anyone would be fantastic...many thanks ....Aileen

Hi,This is my first post on rootschat, and I'm looking for an info on decendants of James and Anne Coleman(nee Sullivan) who were married in  Catholic Parish Church in Passage West in 1868. Their children were..Catherine,Daniel,John,Elizabeth,Mary,James,Anne and Honora...All born between 1869/1879 and Christened in the same church as above.....My Coleman Family have been elluding me for many years, and it is James's sister Honora Coleman b1853 apprx, who is my GGGrandmother, but I just cannot find her before her marriage to Norweigan Otto Melin  in 1875 in Passage West..I have their marr cert but no details about address listed, just father of Honora is John Coleman......,so I'm changing tact and researching Honora's siblings in hope of tracing a bit more info on the Coleman family....James and honora's father was John Coleman b 1818 in Carrigaline, their mother ( poss) Mary Driscoll b 1822 Carrigaline and they married in 1843 Carraigaline...First son Patrick was born 1844 Carrigaline....Any help would be so much appreciated...I know the Colemans are out there somewhere....many thanks.
