Thank you so much to everybody who has posted answers. I think Arthur's descendents have been worked out and I've loaded them all into WikiTree.

Thank you so much for all of the above, and I'll try to pick up a couple of the points raised. My date for Arthur's birth is the latest I believe it could have been, so thank you for suggesting more likely alternatives. The change in spelling of the family name occurred because James had a brass plate made for his business and it was mis-spelled. Rather than change the name plate he changed the family name. Ruth and Jamjar, would you be able to give me the sources for your information please?

Aberdeenshire / Looking for ancestors of Arthur CROLL of Aberdeen

I've hit a brick wall searching for ancestors of Arthur CROLL. I know he was born about 1796, married Elizabeth DAVY (various spellings) 10 Jun 1815, worked as a 'wright' (carpenter and joiner) and the family lived in Chapel St Aberdeen between 1819 and 1825 and attended the Gilcomston Chapel of Ease. In 1825 they lived at Balmakelly, Aberdeenshire (Sources: Children's baptism records), and there is a record of a Mr 'Croll, of St Cyrus' having executed the woodwork of the Fordoun Parish Church, which was completed in 1830 (Source: Mollyson C A. 1893. 'The parish of Fordoun. I know the details of their children Margaret, William, Charles and David but nothing much about Sarah Ann or James Fullarton CROLL. My brick wall also hides the details of Arthur's wife Elizabeth DAVY. I would really appreciate any information available.

I didn't actually generate that particular WikiTree profile, although I have added to it, so I can't comment on the accuracy of the information. I have no source for the marriages. Perhaps the profile manager might be able to provide more information.

Sorry not to have been of more help,

Neil

Thanks for that, Debra - it's really interesting. I hadn't come across the immigration record, and I haven't come across evidence of John and his family being in Cork. Where did you find that?

Cheers, Neil

Thanks, Debra. I hadn't come across that notice, nor had I ever heard that he might be from Cork. I can't find him in the Cork records and guess I assumed that as his children were born in Cloghran that's where he migrated from. Do you have a source for the immigration information?

Thanks again

Neil

Thank you for the link to the parish records - it's always useful to have that sort of document on hand. I've now had to suspend my belief in Benjamin and Sarah being John's parents. I think I was misled there.

Re the question about Shelton: I think 'Shelton' might have been an area or perhaps an estate or farm (most likely the latter). Its only remains are three streets in Perrystown, South Dublin: Shelton Grove, Shelton Gardens and Shelton Drive. I did a 1941-3 map overlay on the area but although it looked open enough to be farmland I couldn't find the name 'Shelton' at all.

I think I can now say that the information about Benjamin BEALE and Sarah SLATER is wrong. It was early in my search and it came from one of the data bases - I think it might have been 'My Heritage' - but I can't find it again. I've also searched through every online Irish resource I can think of and nothing prior to to the birth of John BEALE's children has emerged. So John's birth and parentage details now have to be my next focus. I guess the obvious place to start is Northern Ireland in case he migrated from there.

Thank you for your interest
