Yes, Herbert is the 3rd (born 1904). It took me quite a while to sort that out tho! My dad had always said there were three brothers: Fred (my dad’s dad, George and Albert). I searched for years and could not find a family with those three boys. When I found Herbert on the 1921 census with Sarah Ann, I asked my dad if he was sure the 3rd boy was Albert. He said “actually we just called him Bert.” LOL One mystery solved! :)

It’s been a lot of piecing bits and pieces together! From 1891 onwards I’m sure it’s the right Sarah Ann. The address she gave on her m/c from 1893 matches the 1891 census address where she is listed as Catherine Faulkner’s niece. George Faulkner is a witness at Sarah Ann and Frederick’s wedding in 1893. In 1911, Sarah Ann’s son Herbert is listed as Catherine’s nephew (should be great nephew I think). 1921, Sarah Ann and son Herbert are at 9 Atkinson St, the same address her middle son Fred (my grandfather) put on his m/c in 1929.

All my hints in Ancestry point to Henry as her father. In 1871 she is listed with father Henry and mother Ann. In 1881 Henry is remarried and Sarah appears on the census. Henry’s trade was tailor, same as Sarah Ann’s. Her father’s trade is not indicated on her m/c.

So, two mysteries: why did she say Thomas was her father and how was she related to Catherine? Thomas Farrington was most likely Henry’s father. Did she think of him as a father? Was there a mistake made on the m/c? Did she find out sometime between 1881 and 1891 that Henry was not her father and that’s why she moved in with her aunt? I started a Faulkner family tree to try to find the linkage between the two Farrington families but so far no luck. The research is fun but I would love to get some answers :)

M/C received and indicates Thomas was Sarah Ann's father. However, everything I have points to Henry as her father  :-\ And nothing I have shows that Henry had a middle name. I found her birth registration (Birmingham Warwickshire, 3rd Qtr, V 6d, P 81) and I know her mother was Ann Bates. If I order a b/c from the GRO, will it contain her father's name?

I will let you know for sure! Ordering the M/C this w/e. After more searching, think her father’s name was Henry. Will know in about a month :)

No, Frederick actually passed away sometime before 1921.  I have Sarah Ann in the 1921 census and the address matches Fred Jr's M/C from 1929 so I'm confident that Sarah Anne is the mother. She is listed as a tailoress in 1921, like in 1911 so another bonus! It's just the connection between 1901 Annie and 1911 Sarah Ann that I have struggled with. But I am assuming it's the same person based on the ages of the kids and name of father (which I know for sure was Frederick).

Forgive my ignorance but where can I see mmn for Fred's and George's birth index records? You mentioned you saw Farrington but I can't see where. Thanks again!

@Trish120 - thank you for detailed info!

Oh! I never thought that maybe Fred guessed in 1901…interesting! I actually don’t know her maiden name. I see in 1911 she said 17 years married so I’m looking at a few different Sarah Anne’s and Annie’s marr’d abt 1893. Farrington was one. Also Irving. I don’t know where Fred was in 1911. Thanks for your help :)

I did see that the two towns are very close together so I wondered if one was an error. The name is Sarah Anne (or Annie) Jackson. Born abt 1870. Married to Frederick Jackson. Sons Fred and George. Thank you!

Hello, I have an ancestor on the 1901 census born Birmingham Warwickshire and in the 1911 census born Oldbury Worcestershire. I am 95% sure it’s the same person but can’t reconcile the difference in birthplaces. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!

Thanks everyone. Philip, I did try variations but didn't come up with much. Isabel, the article you posted from the Brighton Gazette is indeed the article I saw in the Hampshire paper and the George Goodwin mentioned there was my uncle. Where did you find the information in your other reply. Very interesting!
