Cork / Re: Collins in Cork
« on: Friday 08 January 21 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Apologies for finding this thread 5 years after it started.

The Denis Morris Collins born in Merthyhr Tydfil 1888 is my Great Grandfather.

He lived in Merthyr and went to Dunmanway to stay with family before marrying Susan Dillon in Glasgow 1909

His father was Daniel Collins and mother Elizabeth Whelan (or Whalan). Elizabeth was born in Wales and Daniel, we believe in Dunmanway.

Would love to know where the track of the record in this thread lead to as it is certainly crossing across where I am looking... particularly the relationship between Dennis Morris and John as I have been working on assumption (with family and records) that the prison record in 1905 for Dennis Morris is my G Grandfather and therefore exploring that John Collins the Shoemaker in West Green was his Uncle.

Thanks both so far.

I don't have the actual pictures but have asked the person who does have them to have a look on the back.

As far as my family are concerned the uniformed chaps are the same person, Robert McGuire born 1896 in Glasgow.

I've been doing a lot of work on family tree and had already discovered that his brother, William John born 1888 Glasgow, emigrated to Canada in 1912 and signed up for Canadian Forces 1914 until discharged 1919 as a driver in 39th battery artillery.

There were no other brothers in the family and, so far, no other candidates for who could be uniformed. But, I can't find any service records for Robert. His parents are William and Mary and he was unmarried until 1921 and addresses of Roberts with records dont match so far.

My family have found 2 pictures which we believe are from around the time of WW1. Is there anything anyone can help me with in how to confirm the period? Authentic uniforms? Regiment?

The generation that it's believed pics are of I can't find any service records for 1 brother and the other was living in Canada at the outbreak of the war and served with the Canadian Forces.

Any help much appreciated.

Paul

Derry (Londonderry) / Owen McKeown (McEwan) b1847 / Martha McCourt
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Wondering of anyone has came across any info on these two ancestors of mine around Derry...

Owen McKeown (could also have been spelt McEwan) b1847, who married Martha McCourt and had a son named John born around 1863 in Derry?

Thanks in advance for any help!

1881 census and beyond have William born around 1862 in Glasgow but we havent been able to find any record, so are now starting to doubt that info.

No further children are known to have been born. Elizabeth only ever appears on census with William (jnr).

Lanarkshire / Quarries around Glasgow 1860s?
« on: Tuesday 30 May 17 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My GGG Grandfather lived in Springburn around 1860-1880 and on the limited info we have found about him he was noted as being a Quarry Labourer.

Is there any info about where he may likely have been employed around that time?

I should also say that we have no info from word of mouth down through the generations of where our branch of McGuire's had roots in Ireland..... so all counties are up for grabs until we can get something to hold on to. The Harrison/Kelly marriage is first glimpse of anything...

Down / Help! Harrison/McGuire wedding/info c 1840-1865

Hi

I am looking to trace a marriage or any info relating to my GGG Grandparents William McGuire (Maguire) and Elizabeth Harrison.

They moved to Glasgow some time around 1860s and had a son, also William born around 1862.

By time William jnr was married in 1885 to Mary Dailey, his father was deceased. His mother appears on a census in 1881 in Glasgow, widowed, and with her sister Mary (Kelly).

Each census has only given the very helpful 'Ireland' as places of birth.

Elizabeth Harrison appears in Glasgow in 1881 and 1901 census with birth around 1843 to 1847. William jnr is also noted as being born in Glasgow 1862 however so far searches have not confirmed this on ScotlandsPeople or elsewhere.

One possibility we have found is a marriage in the parish of Ballyculter and Ballee in September 1853 of Mary Harrison and Charles Kelly - who may be the sister and brother in law of Elizabeth from other census around Glasgow. The same source in Co Down does not have any Maguire/Harrison combinations.

Does anyone have any ideas or additional places to check as I have almost exhausted all searches on Ancestry and FindMyPast.

Thanks in advance, Paul McGuire

Lesson for me was not to take as much info for granted from a census return or marriage certificate. All 3 years of birth were wrong and one place. Lol. Thanks again
