Hi Mary. I sent you a pm. I knew George Caswell. I visited him a few times, near "5 corners", a few years ago. I remember his back yard and the with white pails set in each corner, so that he could mow the lawn!  :)

Victor,

I was wondering if that is the mother or daughter until I check my own records and see that the daughter was married to a George Durham. Phoebe, the mother, was widowed in 1810, in St John's,  Newfoundland. She returned to the west country, along with her daughters. She was born in 1763 so was only 51 when she remarried this James Gilmore.

Thank you for the info.

Armed Forces / Re: regiment RCR ???

Another thought on the subject. There was a Regiment within the British Army that served in Canada until about 1867. It was the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment, (not to be confused with our Royal Canadian Regiment),. It was made up of invalid soldiers and those close to pension. My great great grandfather served with this regiment and remained in Canada after pension. The Regiment was stationed in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec, Kingston and Niagara over the years.

The Royal Canadian Regiment was formed on December 21, 1883. This year will be our 130th Anniversary and us shared with the Royal Canadian Dragoons.

Hope this helps.

Hi claddaghgirl,

I have found no connection between the English Ganders and the Franch, German, Swiss. As I understand, the English version originated in England. Most of the Ganders in the US are of the Swiss/German variety.

I have been laying low for quite a while but do check back from time to time.

Casalguildi

Very well could be! I already had the date and place for Sheila Teirney Straker as 21 May 1997 in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. The rest seems to fit, as well. I will look into that further.

Many Thanks,

Mike

Armed Forces / Re: RCR? Same as Royal Artillery?

He could have been close to pension or invalid in some way. My g g grandfather transferred to the regiment when he was only 35 years old, (after 18 years service with the 52nd Regt of Foot). He was tired of dragging his family all over the Commonwealth.
