Somerset / Thomas Clevely Walters and Martha WALTERS (nee RAPPS)
« on: Friday 12 October 07 19:47 BST (UK)  »
My great grandparents Thomas Clevely Walters and his wife Martha (nee Rapps) both died in High Littleton in December 1924 and March 1927 respectively. They were minor local "celebrities" in their way, having run a shop in the village during the early 1910's, no mean feat considering that Martha was blind.

I suspect therefore that their deaths might have been worthy of a mention in any local paper that might have operated in the area at that time, and I was wondering if anyone might have an idea of which paper that might be, and where old copies might be viewed.

Thanks

Hi Old Rowley. The information that I have (not complete) is as follows:

My grandfather was Bertram Samuel Day, and was serving on the Anglo Saxon which I believe was a Merchantman owned by Lawther Latta (taken over by Reardon Smith). Family history tells that he was responsible for saving crew members when the Anglo Saxon was torpedoed in the First World War - no dates I'm afraid.

My uncle was Bertram George Day who, we understand,  was awarded the B.E.M in the second world war for shooting down an aircraft. By sheer coincidence he was  also torpedoed aboard the second Anglo Saxon in the second world war, although I don't think that his B.E.M was anything to do with that incident.
Again no dates I'm afraid.

Armed Forces / Citations - B.E.M and Mention in Dispatches

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am interested in finding the citations for my grandfather who was mentioned in dispatches in the First World War and my uncle who received the B.E.M in the Second World War, both while serving in the Merchant Navy. I understand that they appear in the London Gazette, but as I have no idea of the dates that they were awarded, I wondered if there was an easier way of finding them. Thanks

Hi Alison - thanks for those two - I'll do some more research, the engine driver link is another possibility to explore.

Gloucestershire / Beach Family - West and East Dean

I am following the Beach family in West and East Dean, particularly Alfred Henry Beach born 22nd March 1884 in West Dean. Mother shown as Eliza Beach - Domestic Servant - father's name not noted. Does this ring a bell with anyone ?

I noticed that there is a marriage between a Joseph Pike and a Mary Ann Burns in Cardiff in 1877  (Apr-May-June Vol 11a Page 358), so that may be him.  No deaths or re-marriages that fit in with Elizabeth Pike however. If Emily Pike was born in Cardiff in 1867 (ish) despite there being no BMD, and he remarried in Cardiff in 1877, it does suggest that they may have been in the area during that period.

There is a Mary Ann Burns living at John Street Roath Cardiff in the 1871 census, but there could be a slight discrepancy with the age of the Mary Ann Pike in the 1881 Census

Can't say that I have made much progress, but  a couple of interesting points have arisen.

Joseph is noted on the 1861 Census as being born in Norfolk, and being a greengrocer in Cwmdare, Aberdare.  In the 1871 Census (where they continue to be elusive), a Susan Pike, widow aged 49 from Norfolk is living in Cwmdare, Aberdare and working as a greengrocer.

Secondly, Emily is described in the 1881 census as being 14 and born in Cardiff, but I can't find her birth on the complete BMD at that time. More research needed here I suspect.

The written detail on the 1881 census is so poor, that you can understand how complete families just disappear !

Thanks for those - it's nice to find some people of the same name in the area. There seemed to be a lot in the Sussex and Herefordshire areas.
