Carole, I'm mortified. I'm a *trained researcher* and I've just spent the few days staring at the right name on the wrong death cert... 🤣

Everyone, thank you so much for all your replies! I am an idiot.... the Janet who married in 1955 is, indeed, Janet herself. I had too many death certs open at once and got Janet's and her mother's mixed up (Janet's spouse John McCallum registered her mother's death). The mystery of her marriage is solved! I'm still conflicted as to whether it was my Janet who emigrated in 1924, (https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=USC/1930/004952044/00683/0170) - Janet's aunt Margaret emigrated at around that time (according to some rather vague notes my late grandfather made in the 1940s) but it's equally possible that I've muddled up two people with the same name. I'll do some more digging on that, but honestly thank you all so much for taking the trouble to reply and sort me out!

Added as Carole's reply came in as I was typing - I had indeed been tying myself in knots looking for a daughter who doesn't exist. Thank you all so much for your help!

Also to add, in common with a lot of families the same names crop up time and again as I'm working through the Peddie side of the family - it's an object lesson in double checking the dates and surnames carefully! I feel a right fool, making such a rookie error....

United States of America / Janet Syme Henderson - in New York?
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 18:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Getting back into some family tree tracing after a (very long!) break and have hit a bit of a brick wall. I have a Janet Syme Henderson born in Scotland in 1906, and died in Scotland in 1981. The only other record of Janet I can find indicates that she emigrated to the US in or around 1924 - she appears on a passenger list in 1924 and there's a record for her in the 1930 NY census staying with family in Nassau, NY state. It gets more confusing because at some point she had a daughter (also called Janet Syme Henderson) who married in Scotland in 1955 (so *might* still be alive). However, I can't find any trace at all of Janet Senior having married and / or had a child, or of her having returned to Scotland... and I can't find a birth cert for Janet Junior. I'm not particularly sure about where to look as I've limited knowledge about how US civil records work, or where to find them. If anyone can point me in the direction of where I could look, I'd be really grateful!

Oh dear, that's not very helpful!! I tried google and didn't come up with a direct link to the library, but there's a good family history website at fifefhs.org where someone might be able to help you.
Sorry I can't shed any more light!
Anna

PS your tour sounds like a good idea though!

Don't have access to the archive, but they have a website at www.dunfermlinepress.com which has contact details - perhaps some kind person at the newspaper could point you in the right direction?

Hi Jamy,
Don't know if this helps or hinders - Chryston is nowhere near Maryhill. Could the person have originally been from Chryston and the body returned for burial in a family plot?
The Mitchell Library would probably be able to help you; I can't remember their web site, but www.glasgow.gov.uk is the City Council website and has links to libraries etc.  If you only have two days in the city, it's probably best if you can narrow down your search as far as possible!
Sorry if this causes more confusion - but good luck in your search!

Hi Joy
you could also try http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/ which has the statistical accounts for Scotland.  You might pick up some interesting background there!

Midlothian / Re: Edinburgh University 1907-12

Dear Marj
The University more than likely keeps a record of graduates, though whether this would be in the archives or somewhere else I am not sure.  Your best bet might be to contact the university direct - their website is www.ed.ac.uk or the library website is www.lib.ed.ac.uk where you should get details of how to contact them.  Sorry I can't be any more help than that!

The Common Room / Re: Strange Emails
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I'd agree with all the previous advice; I had to close my yahoo account as I was getting 20+ emails a day telling me that seven bank accounts I don't have had been hacked by spammers and the only way round it was to send all my security details by return.... Obvious spam, but very annoying, as were the dozens from Third World countries telling me that for access to my bank account I would get a percentage of £17million AND save lives in war torn countries at the same time.  Just became tiresome!  And don't get me started on the porno ones.......  Now, I only give my email out to trusted people and always tick the box if I'm buying online to say I don't want email updates which seems to help enormously.

I'd say if it claims to be from your bank, then phone the bank to check before you do anything else and just don't open any attachments you are not expecting.
