Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / ETTERSHANK Burial
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 04:10 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the place of burial of John Ettershank, who died in the house of his daughter Amy Ettershank. Amy was married to Samuel Chew Hooper; their home was Scotsbridge House, Rickmansworth. He died 8 July 1912. I assume Amy died about the same time, because her husband was on a shipping list in Canada soon thereafter, with his daughter and a nurse, and he is listed as a widower. If you have any information of any of these people I would be most grateful.
George

Norfolk / Eke, James, b. abt 1831
« on: Monday 01 January 07 05:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone give me the antecedents of this James Eke? He is recorded in the 1851 Census as the nephew of Aquila Eke, a blacksmith in Drayton, Norfolk. I have Aquila's ancestry tied down fairly well, but I can't find a brother or sister of his with a son James.
Appreciate any help,
George.

Norfolk / Aquilla Eke, Blacksmith of Hindolveston
« on: Tuesday 09 May 06 07:19 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the antecedents of one Aquilla Eke, born 20 Dec 1801 in Hindolveston. He married Frances Goss and produced 10 children, mostly in Drayton, where he lived out his life as a blacksmith. His son Aquilla did the ironwork for the Chapel Fields Garden in Norwich.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. What a great first name, Aquilla! (in some census data iit is spelled with one l)
Thanks, George.

Thank you, John and Mo.
John, my wife says she does not remember such a comment (she was 10 at the time) but the mental image is wonderful and it would have ben appropriate! Here in Aus we had to wait weeks!
Mo, thank you for that - I'll also be trying to make the connection and will advise you if I have anything.
I got a lot of help by using various search engines the name I was interested in, plus genealogy e.g. Allan +genealogy in the search box.  I was able to contact some very helpful people that way.
Cheers, George.

Hi, Monica,
Thinking further about Christina, I take it that you have viewed the original image. The father is listed there as Cawthorne Eaglestone and the mother as ? Hawthorn (no first name?)? Is there any indication of where whe was born? I can't find a birth that corresponds to that set of parents in England or Scotland. Any ideas?
Thanks and regards,
George.

Thanks, John,
Well, as far as I am concerned, half the fun of this genealogy stuff is a glimpse into the lives people lived. Is your mother still alive (my parents are long gone)? If so can you get any other reminiscences?
My God, you have a good memory to remember the license number in 1953! My wife remembers seeing the Coronation on her grandmother's TV - one of the very few around in Mumbles, Wales. A tiny screen - and she remembers seeing Queen Salote of Tonga sitting out in the rain! Must have filled the screen!
Thought you might like this extract from the Anglican Church News online:
"24 November 2001: We hear from the vicar of Stiffkey
The Guardian has published an essay by the current vicar of Stiffkey about Harold Davidson, rector of that parish from 1906 to 1932, who was defrocked for 'systematic misbehaviour'. A note to our readers who are not English: the word 'Stiffkey' is actually pronounced 'Worcestershire'." It is at www.guardian.co.uk/religion/Story/0,2763,605275,00.html
Thanks again and kind regards,
George

Thank you, Monica and Russell. That would seem to tie up Christiana fairly well. I guess that GGF George Ettershank will just remain a mystery. But then maybe something will turn up!
Cheers and thanks again, George.

Thank you, Russell. These Ettershank males were not long lived - several generations back then they seemed to pop off at 30 -50! Fortunately for me later generations are longlived. I could not even track him down in the 185 census until some kind soul found him under Hershank - the double t looks like an H in the original.

I just found out about a memorial inscription that gives Christiana's death as 13 Jan 1862; it is in Cambuslang, and includes a number of members of the family, including one who died in Australia, so it does not really define where she died. But a definite step forward.

Thanks for your help, and best regards, George.

2. Christiana Eaglestone, b 24/9/1826 in Northamptonshire, married John Ettershank 1850, went to Australia 1852, took sick and returned in 1860, died in Scotland, prob Lanarckshire as John's father had a farm at Priesthill, nr Glasgow.

Can anyone help, please?
