Hi Annie. I looked through military deaths at the library, the only information it had was the year and place of his death.
I was prompted to look there because he did not appear in any census after 1881.
Another mystery is his mother, Catherine Gordon, born in 1841. Censuses show the birth as either Gibraltar or Spain (B.S.) She married Thomas Whiteside in Sept. 1859 in Preston, Lancs., I have the marriage cert.
I have Thomas and Catherine on 1861 census, Thomas a butcher age 25 and Cath. age 23 yrs. although here is showns her birthplace as Isle of Man.
In 1871 the couple and their son John William were at North Fort Barracks, Weymouth but their ages differ. Thomas now 29 and Cath 30 yrs.
In 1881 John was nowhere to be found, this is why I looked at the military side.
Although the ages in 1881 for Thomas was 38 and Cath. 40. Then in 1891 he is shown as being 40yrs and Cath 43. It is definitely the same couple because of their addresses and occupations. All the Whiteside family were butchers. HELP!
