I think you are right, I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the certificate/s to find out for sure. Thanks again.

Thank you both so much for your prompt response.  Still confused though.  I think there must be at least 2 James Scadding's and / or confusion with the maiden name of James' wife/Walter's mother.
I have a copy of Walter's Death certificate - he died in NSW, Australia 2 June 1896 and that says his mother was Eliza Coombs. The informant for the certificate was Martha, his wife.  Maybe she did not remember his mum's maiden name too well.
I also have their marriage certificate, 6 April 1881, from Victoria, Australia. That says Walter was a widower since 1875 and born in Guernsey.
On the marriage cert his parents details are given as James Scadding, Cabinetmaker, and Iset Scadding (Holmes).
I think that Holmes might be the more likely one, just because Walter was more likely to have given the details on that one rather than Martha.
Maybe Walter's mother was born in the Channel Islands?  It's a bit confusing at times I find  :-\

I am looking for some information about my great grand-father, Walter Scadding, born abt 1844.  I found him in the 1851 census living with his parents, James Scadding (cabinetmaker) his mother, Izet and his sister Emily. Their address was 117 Well Road, Guernsey and in 1871 he was listed as a porter at the Royal Yacht Club Hotel.  He later worked as a steward on vessels working the Australian coast.
I think they may be connected to Scaddings in Somerset but cannot find a link to confirm this.
In his death certificate (he died in Australia) his mother's maiden name is Coombe/s - but on his marriage certificate to my g/grand-mother (his second wife, Martha Child) his mother's maiden name is Holmes.
I was wondering if there is anything in the 1861 census or any records or details of his first wife/marriage. His Australian marriage certificate gives his marital status as widower.
It seems that his parents may have come to Guernsey from England.  The origins of his parents have been a bit of a brick wall for some time.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
