« on: Tuesday 20 August 19 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi There
I am interested in hearing from anyone who has found Scandinavian ancestors in St John and/or Harbour Grace before 1820.

Why am I interested?

My great^3 grandmother was born St John 1813 and has an unusual first name  Darthula - which my be Scandinavian in origin.

Many thanks

Hi Pauline

We exchanged messages back in July - I have found a little more out about my family history.
The family surname as I know it is Rowe - although looking through historic records there are lots of variations including Rose/Rosze and Re/Rue/Ray/Roy (all with or without le/la/de in front of them).

Is there any chance you could look for a marriage of Elizabeth Selous to Hugh or Hughes from 1750 to 1765 for me, please?

Between 1761 and 1764 they had 3 children christened in either St Brelade or St Peter.

If you find one could you also look for an Elizabeth (No idea of surname) to Elie or Elias from 1745 to 1765 for me as well, please?

Many thanks in advance
Chrissie

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Letters and/or diaries written by Victorian females
« on: Thursday 15 August 19 18:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi There
I am sure that you would not be surprised that there are lots of books and published documents about the lives of men in the Victorian age. But what about the lives of women?

There are just a few books - based on diaries of the rich and famous.

What I would like to do is to create a free on-line archive that anyone can access with copies of letters or diaries detailing the everyday events for our Victorian female ancestors.

If anyone would is interested in sharing any material can the please contact me.

Many Thanks
Chrissie

Canada Lookup Request / Newfoundland Ancestors pre-1850s
« on: Thursday 15 August 19 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

If you are reading this - then can I begin by saying good luck.

My ancestors the Rowe family from St John/Harbour Grace were in Newfoundland c1750 to c1840.

Although a lot of records are available online most of these start after 1840. The Grand banks website is a really good place to start. It only includes records that volunteers have been allowed to copy and post. http://ngb.chebucto.org/

If your family pre-dated 1850 then my next suggestion is that it is likely that they were involved in the fishing industry.  A really useful website is the Newfoundland Maritime History Archive which has a number of on-line resources including the Keith Matthews Names Files 1500-1850 https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/keith/index.php although it can be daunting when you first look at it - it list individuals by surname and forename that had a connection to Newfoundland - even if that person was not based in Newfoundland - such as Devon or Ireland.

And finally, another resource is the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador https://www.fhsnl.ca although you need to pay to join they have a very good range of records that you can access online once you have joined.

In addition there a number of one-surname groups available that you can connect with.

Hope this helps
(Still searching for Darthula's parents)

Chrissie

Hi Pauline

From my look into the online records, there were lots of "French" names around 1735.

Is there anything like a French version of Elias Rowe - Elie Ray/Roul (sorry I am now just guessing)?

or any chance you could send me a list from 1730 - 1740 to look through?

Many thanks
Chrissie
