The Common Room / Re: Stumped of Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much for all these replies. Not only has it kick-started me again, but I have learned a great deal in the process. I thought that I had widened my parameters sufficiently, but no.  The directories are amazing.
Many many thanks. Greg  :)

The Common Room / Stumped of Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 08:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys, thanks for your help in anticipation of that. I got my paternal family tree back to the early 1500s (not bad for an amateur, I thought?) but the Yin to my Yang has been I've fallen almost at the first hurdle on my maternal side.
I have got back to my Gx3 Grandfather, William JAMESON born 1810/11 at Liverpool and can get nothing further. I came to him via his son, Burgoyne (Berguine) JAMESON b.1851 Liverpool. William would seem to be a cabinet maker or joiner.
Would it be possible for anybody to help with a direction that I might have missed. I have done all the "common" sites, but - nothing.
Also, could anybody suggest where the unusual forename of Burgoyne may emanate from? He had a brother called Houghton. They both struck me as unusual and may provide a clue that I am missing.

Hello and Welcome to Rootschat  :)

For others looking who might be able to offer further assistance

Is this the family on the 1841 census?

Kings St. 1, Bury Lancashire
Philip PICKLES 50 Moulder
Ellen 55
Alice 30
Philip 7

all noted as born in this county

Might this be a child of Phillip & Ellen's:

Piece Title:   Piece 3694: Sheffield, Whichfield Chapel, Halifax, (Wesleyan), 1807-1837
from England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970

I have also confirmed:
Wedding Banns at Halifax 1811 (Spouse Ellen Holme, Bury) (Spells his name Philip Pickels)
Marriage at St Peters Church, Bolton-le-Moor [Bolton]

Do you know the name of Ellen's parents ?
Sometimes naming patterns can be found within the family

Family History Beginners Board / All Births registered??
« on: Thursday 22 February 18 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody put me out of my misery, please. I am back to 1791 with Philip Pickles (Pickels) and possibly 1767 with James Pickle(s), his father, who both "say?" they were born at (Little) Bolton. I suspect they may have been around Shelf, near Halifax. But - I can find very little as regards either of them at either Bolton or Halifax. Banns, wedding & death for Philip, death for James
So, my question is - would all births in the mid to late 1700s have to be registered? Could it be that James may be another name at birth, e.g. John, Jack etc?
Any help gratefully appreciated.   :'(

Family History Beginners Board / Father’s name of bride at marriage
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
Does the fact that the bride’s father’s name appears on the record of marriage mean that he was there or could he in fact be deceased? (And I’ve just wasted a fortnight looking for somebody it turns out that I knew was dead?) :'(

Hi Ladyhawk. I think that you are correct with Joshua. All the information fits, as do the dates and occupation.
The Phillip that you identify, I think is a grandson, but I have found what I believe to be Phillip the son age 7 years from the 1841 census.
I tried Ellen for any family, but as yet, I'm struggling. I'm sure that you know the feeling better than me, but my head is swimming at the minute. I need to get my scrawled notes in some sort of order. but - bright side - I'm learning all the time. Thanks for your help. :)

Library and FHS Lookups / Drawn a blank 1790 - Phillip PICKLES, Bury
« on: Sunday 11 February 18 14:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have resumed by family history search after some time and managed to get back to the birth of my relative, Phillip PICKLES in 1790, I believe, at Bury, Lancs. I have also confirmed:
Wedding Banns at Halifax 1811 (Spouse Ellen Holme, Bury) (Spells his name Philip Pickels)
Marriage at St Peters Church, Bolton-le-Moor [Bolton]
Census, Bury 1841
Burial Wesleyan Methodist Church, Union St, Bury 1849
I can show three of his relatives forward of 1815, Alice, Phillip and John.
My "newby untrained" question is - how to I push this backwards now? How do I find his parents and what other children he may have had? I have registered for assorted commercial websites with little success. I have tried LancashireBMD & lan-opc but am spiralling round in circles. I'm more than happy to do the work, but am clueless as to how to dig back further.
Is there any kind soul who can give me a nudge in the right direction please?
Many thanks in anticipation, Greg  :)
