Hi Jools, no worries. So is your grandfather the cousin John to whom my husband would refer? How many children did Fred and Prill have? I have fished out some old photos and these include a lovely picture of Prill as a young woman, one with Fred i think and various of Eliza and Fred. Talk to you soon.  Maria

Hi Jools, You are spot on.   Since the other brother Leonard ACE and his wife Alice Maud died without issue, I'm guessing that your grandfather was Frederick William James (1894-1961?).  He was married to Priscilla.  I have photos of them in the 20s to 40s socialising with Len and Maud, as well as a couple of pics of Ephraim and Eliza.  Fred and Prill went of the radar shortly prior to Fred's death (from cancer I think).  I believe that they had a son called John. But we might be wrong about this.  Could you enlighten me?   (I only met Maud and Ed's widow as I came on the scene in 1990).

My father in law was Edward Alexander Woolnough (1912-1987) who did indeed emigrate to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1948 just before his twins Alan and Mary were born. (He married Edith Florence Regnier in 1936).  Prior to this he had Robert Edward (1940-2007).  All of these children came back to Britain for their education, the latter stayed on where he met and married me in 1990.  All four of Ed's children have gone on to have children and grandchildren of their own.

If my own deductions are correct and you are descended from Fred then I would be fascinated as we always wondered what happened to him and his family.

best wishes

Hi Jools,

Ephraim Woolnough's son Frederick Ephraim was my husband's grandfather. Please could you tell me from the birth certificate which wife Lydia or Susan was Ephraim senior's mother?  And anything else about him that you are willing to tell me about them or any other useful sources.  I am subscribed to Ancestry.

Many thanks

Meliora your work clearly shows my Frederick E Woolnough and this tallies with the sketch information that i have in my family archives. If so he is indeed my father-in-law's father. Many thanks for your conscientiousness.

Looking at my records Sarah Syned was married to Ephraim W and these two are the parents of our forebear of Fredrick Ephraim Woolnough born on 29 January 1879.  Ephraim W is listed as a cooper on his son's birth certificate if this helps.  FE was born at 22 Norman Road, Old Bow
