Gadget,

I was going over e-mails with my cousins from years past and found one from five years ago in which my oldest cousin mentions—“My version of what I know about Grandmother Mary Brown. Understood she was illegitimate and grew up with cousins . . .”
He goes on to talk about her travels across Canada and many of the difficulties she faced.
The mention of “illegitimate” falls in place with what you’ve found.

Again thanks for your assistance.

Birth registration for this Mary Jane Brown:

Mary Jane Brown (illegitimate)
Born 20 June 1878 at 4 am, Auchencairn village.
Mother - Margaret Brown, Cook.
Informant - Janet Hughan, aunt. Present

Now to find which of the Clints was Margaret's mother.

Wow!, this is a lot to digest. Let me go through this and check with my cousins.
I'm in awe of what you've come up with.

Gadget, please enjoy the rest of the day. You've done so much and so fast.
This latest path may be the correct one as another branch of our family did a genealogy book almost 40 years ago and listed Mary Jane Brown as being born in 1978. We’ve always dismissed that as it didn’t aligne with the Canadian census. Perhaps she misrepresented her age on the 1911 census.

Another tree has her born in 1878 and I've found a  on SP in Rerrick for that year - which is probably the closest to the info you've given.

In 1881, this Mary Brown b. Rerrick is aged 2 and   is living with her grandfather, a William Clint, aged 84 b. Kelton and quite a few of his other grandchildren. These include a Margaret Brown, granddaughter, aged 24.

Worth following up but it's rather late now. I'll try again tomorrow if no one else has found any more.

The perfect question. I always thought she was from Auchencairn. I had visited an Aunt there in 1965. In the mists of time, I was very young and I've forgoten my Aunt's name. I'll check with the other two cousins. One of my cousins tells me, that a related family member to Mary Jane Brown (perhaps a nephew?) was a Dr. Henry Jarvis (Jervis?) living in Creetown. He had a surgery in his home. My cousin met him in 1981 and she believes he was in his mid 80’s then. He died later that year.

And again....that was the perfect question.

How sure are you that she was from Kirkcudbrightshire?

Thank-you for this. The Mary Jane Brown I'm looking for died in Winnipeg Manitobe in 1966.
I'm really quite impressed with all the help with my search.

The Brown family from Buittle as in the census of 1891,1901 and 1911 appear on kirkyards.co.uk  at Buittle Kirkyard as follows

289   In loving memory of Robert Brown, who died at Barchain, 18th Nov'r. 1889, aged 42 years. Jane Brown, his wife, who died at Barchain, 27th Nov'r. 1913, aged 59 years. William Calderwood Brown, their son, Pte. 1/4 K.O.S.B., who died of wounds at 53rd casualty clearing station, Palestine, 20th April 1917, aged 32 years. Alexander Brown , their son, who died at Lincoln Villa, Castle Douglas, 11th Feb'y 1957, in his 81st year. Mary Jane Brown, their daughter, who died at Lincoln Villa, Castle Douglas, 9th Nov'r 1958, aged 72 years.
This may not be the same Mary Jane Brown you are looking for as she has died in Castle Douglas although she may have returned home.

This is correct depending on the month taken of the census. Douglas and Ivor were twins. Harvey would have been 1-yr old. But this is the Mary I'm looking for.
The 1911 census (Moose Jaw Saskatchewan) lists her (Mary Brown) as age 26

Just checking:

On the 1916, Souris, Manitoba

Edward Moody, 35
Mary, 32, b.
Martin, 4
Douglas, 2
Ivor, 2
Harvey 2

Mary's children, were born in Canada— George Martin Moody 1912, John Ivor Moody 1913, Douglas Edward Moody 1913  and Harvey Louis 1915 (my father).

In my previous post, I mentioned that the  were in Buittle in 1901. This parish is the next one to Kelton which is where Castle Douglas is :

Do you have the name of her children in  order as it may help with identifying her  ?

Gadget,

You are a marvel. I'll start with what you've given me. Perhaps my guess at 1884 was off. I've checked with Canadian census records and done the math, but I wonder if she may have been a bit generous with noting her age.
I’ll ask my cousins if they can remember Mary’s siblings names.

Thank-you

Shane

Welcome from me too.

If she was born in Kirkcudbrightshire circa 1884, there is just this one, but born Kircudbright rather than any of the parishes around Castle Douglas:

I886 Mary Jane Brown, Kirkcudbright   SP ref 871/58

In 1901, this Mary J is with her widowed mother and siblings in Buittle

Jane Brown, widow, 48, farmer, b. Dunlop. Ayrshire
Margaret, d, 26, b. Kircudbright
Alex, s, 24, b. Balmaclellan
Mary J, d, 14, b. Kirkcudbright
Elizabeth G, d, 12, b. -do-
Agnes, d, 10, b. -do--

Mary Jane Brown married Edward Moody approx. 1910-1912. Their first son (my uncle) was born in 1912. I’ve yet to find the  records.

The 1911  lists her as Mary Brown, domestic  immigrating in 1910 .
A little below her on the 1911  is my grandfather, Edward Moody, listed as lodger.
She is listed in the 1916  as Mary Moody born in , Presbyterian, immigrating in 1910.
The 1916  also lists husband Edward Moody and their four sons.
Four sons in four years—cold prairie winters.

I know a little of her life after her arrival in Canada, but nother really of her in .
