Surrey / Re: Marriage of John James and Matilda Cogan April Quarter 1920

Thank you so much for all your replies.  I think his father was registered as John Masters - I did find a baptism for him which says the parents are John and Louisa but this is a very complicated family.  His mother, Louisa, changed the children's surnames to James for some reason which I have yet to find out.  That is the reason why I am interested to find out his father's name which was on the marriage certificate.  Kate Hyman is Louisa's sister who married William James.
I will send for the certificate - thank you all again for your help.
Kind regards :)

Hello again AnnMartin

I forgot to add that my brother in law's Aunt Till (Matilda Cogan - BIRTH 7 NOV 1896 • Wandsworth, England DEATH OCT 1978 • Bromley, Greater London, England - 1st cousin 1x removed of brother-in-law)
married John James (Hyman?) (John James 1887– BIRTH 28 MAR 1887)
possibly William and Ellen Hyman's younger brother.

 Kind regards :)

Hello AnnMartin
I have been researching my brother in law's family and his grandfather was William Hyman (born about 1881 in Wandsworth) and from what I can see he is the William Hyman brother of Ellen Hyman (James).  William married Mary Cogan and their daughter was my brother in law's mother, Mary.  He was always confused about his birth certificate because his mother's maiden name on it was James - even though he thought her maiden name was Mary Hyman.  I can see why you are confused as I came to a standstill trying to find out more about William Hyman's family.  In 1891 they are living at 18 Fentons Cottages, Garratt Lane and in 1901 the childrens' names are more or less the same but the address is now 18 Jubilee Cottages, Garratt Lane.  Whereas John Hyman and Fanny were the parents in 1891 it is Louisa in 1901.  It is all very muddled and the question is if and why did they change their name to James.  Just thought I'd let you know that I have a similar enigma.
Kind regards  :) :)

Hello Jim, I think you may have helped me before.
This is my Granddad:
He volunteered to join the army in 1915, served in France with 7th Battalion King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment (KORL) - his regiment No. 22995 - July 1916 to July 1918.  Wounded on 8 July 1918, left arm amputated is recorded.  Received a Silver War Badge because of his disability leading to discharge.  British War and Victory medals.
His service in France was up to 8 February 1918 with 7th Battalion.  This battalion was disbanded on 8 Feb and he was among 6 officers and 194 men who were transferred to 1/4th Battalion, it was with this battalion he was wounded on a day the war diary records as a "quiet day, nothing to report" - this on a day when 3 men were killed and 11 wounded.  He was in the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley Southampton in August 1918.
Many thanks.
