Midlothian / Newhaven Edinburgh - An Appeal
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 19:38 GMT (UK) »
On an appropriately blustery stormy day, I recently attended a small memorial service commemorating the anniversary of what has come to be known as the Eyemouth Disaster of 1881. Tragically that day cost the lives of over 180 fishermen from the many small fishing ports along the North Sea coastline, not only Eyemouth. The port of Newhaven suffered along with those others and their service was attended by many of the descendants of the 17 local men who lost their lives that day. During the service it was mentioned that while other ports had memorials to those lost lives, Newhaven had none. The Newhaven Heritage Society has launched an appeal for funds to help remedy this omission and create a memorial in the village. If anyone would like to contribute to this appeal, please follow the link: www.jumblebee.co.uk/newhavenheritagecentre.
