Thank you carolyn and nicksmum for giving it a go. You both got much further then I did! :(

Ma cara, when you say larger, do you mean physically bigger - as in the width and height? or higher resolution?

Jillie

I'm reasonably good at using photoshop but this image is so damaged I don't know where to start.

Anyone else want to have a shot?

I think both of these are post WW1,certainly the 2nd. one is.In this you can detect a tie clip first worn by RFC during WW1 & became popular after the war also the double-breasted suit looks from about the same time.

Thanks Jim.

If they are both after 1918 then neither of them can be Patrick as he would be 16. I don't think either of those boys look like adults.
At the moment I can't think of anyone that they might be. Gives me something to think about :D :-\ :o

I agree Lynn. The face shape is too different. They are both labelled as Patrick who was born 1902. Depending on the year these were taken might give us a rough idea which child looks about the right age. The boy in the cap looks a bit older to me.

There were several Harrington sons. James was born in 1892. On the 1911 census for their parents there is mention of 6 children born to the marriage with only 5 still alive by 1911. I've never tried to look for the missing child since I've no idea what gender it was or what year it was born.

I imagine the rounder faced child's picture is from around 1910 or perhaps a little later but that's just guess work on my part. I don't know if the other photo is from the same time.

Jayne Shrimpton has just got back to me. Apparently,

"the sides brought forward in front of her ears and the length pinned back behind into a chignon. This style was in vogue broadly between  1916 and 1924 but is most typical of the years 1918-1922.................A young woman, she was probably born around the turn of the 20th century and this photograph may well have been her 21st birthday portrait"

So there you have it. My grandmother was born in 1898 and her 21st birthday would have been in 1919. I can't conclusively say that the lady is my grandmother but there is no other Harrington female who fits into this time frame

These two both were both labelled as Patrick Harrington. I know that Patrick was born in the summer of 1902. It may be the same young man with a couple of years in between when the pictures was taken but I don't think so. I think they are different Harringtons

Sorry, we are getting into semantics a little bit on your thread, but only because your photo is an intriguing one!

No, don't apologise. I'm learning all the time. I'm just finding it a little frustrating that I don't have the original which would, I imagine, have told me so much more. I've got a couple of others photos of different Harrington's which were also sent. Same problem though - copies of copies. They've been labelled as the same person although I'm not convinced.

I've been in touch with Jayne Shrimpton who has told me she can date the clothing to an accuracy of 5 to 8 years for "Mary Harrington" so I'm awaiting her report.

Should be interesting  :D ;D

I should also mention that as far as I know there was nothing on the back of the original. However, I also don't know how many times my copy had been copied before it was sent to me. Mine may be a copy of the original or a copy of a copy
