The Common Room / Re: The significance of Middle names
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently come across a family where the females were given their own maiden name as a middle name -- so (not the real names!) Jane Smith Jones, née Smith, was the mother of Jane Jones Jones, Ann Jones Jones, etc. Seems they were determined that the girls would keep their birth surname by hook or by crook!!

And are you sure his name is Pero?  It looks like Petr to me.  The end letter is the same as one a few higher which is an r.

True -- but on the other hand check out the o on the end of Laszlo on line 2.

The cert says that Robert Rieve was in attendance when she died, all that means is that he was in the house to witness the death. He may have been visiting or called in off the street when hubby realised how close to death she was and needed a witness.

I think he's a bit more significant than that, as he's the Informant -- i.e. he is the one who turned up at the Registrar's office to register the death. I think he is at least likely to have been a family friend.

I'm no expert, but I see the name on the certificate as "Allis", perhaps a phonetic spelling of her name Alice. ???

Yes, I wondered myself if that might be a slightly unusual capital A -- I wish we could see more of this scribe's writing for comparison!

Cheers!

Mike

My immediate reaction was also for Dressmaker and Thorburn -- but after a second look, I wouldn't be surprised if occupation turned out to be Quilt Maker.

I think you are wrong on that one. The line says he is Croatian, with his last known permanent address in (wherever) Hungary. Sremska Mitrovica is close enough to Croatia that it doesn't seem impossible for someone born in Croatia to live there for a while -- especially someone who later turned up in America! Unless you have reason to believe that an ethnic Croatian would not have been able to live in Mitrovica at that time, in which case you need to provide your evidence.

Why are you so dead set against Mitrovica? The ship's manifest says his "Race or People" is Croatian, and his "Last Permanent Residence" was Mitrovica, Hungary, which seems to make perfect sense. I can't read that place name as anything but Mitrovica -- the lack of a dot on the "i" is really not significant, as I can see at least 3 other definite "i"s in the snippet which are undotted.

Or it could be brother Thomas had a daughter called Margaret who married a Culcheth?

The brackets around (unread posts) and (new replies) is a good tweak

It's not just brackets, after the update it just showed unread   replies, so to begin with it looked as if it was one subject unread replies.  Most people got used to it meaning two subjects, but now Trystan has made it even clearer. :)

Personally, I think those items should be buttons, like the Logout and Search ones, but probably in a different colour -- maybe blue?

Immediate first impression for George was Hurley -- but on further inspection I think it might be Hinsley.

Cheers.
