Europe / Kolupaytio or variations
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 20:12 GMT (UK)  »
A friend has asked me to help her trace her father's family background.  His name was Joseph Kolupaytio.  We think that he was born in Warsaw, poland in 1906.  He came to England with his parents sometime before 1922. (He married in Bethnal Green, London in 1922)  His parents were Michael and Agatha Kolupaytio.  The spelling of the name on English records varies considerable sometimes two versions on the same record.

We do we start to find the following?

1.  When did they come to England?
2.  Where does the family come from?  The name doesn't sound Polish.
3.  Would they have had to register as "Aliens" and if so where are these records.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated as this is my first attempt at an Immigrant family

Edward Hammond & Sarah were the parents of Frederick 1814, Henry 1821, Sophia 1823, George 1825 and Thomas 1826.  The children and their decendents all lived in Stowupland for the next 50/60 years.  Does anybody know where Edward and Sarah came from.  It could be Stowmarket, Stowupland or Stoke by Nayland, all haveappeared in various records.  Does anybody have connections with or knowledge of this family.  I would be very interested to hear from you.

I am interested in the Lofts who wandered westward into NE London.  That is William Lofts born about 1818 in Hackney. I am confident that earlier generations came from East Anglia but my ancester were experts at avoiding officialdom

Northamptonshire / The RILEYS Of Long Bucky Wharf
« on: Monday 04 September 06 17:20 BST (UK)  »
I have very recently discovered that my 3rd Great grandfather was a boatman in and around Long Buckby Wharf.  I have located four children,
Joseph,(b. abt 1811)   he went to Leicester as a railway porter
Mary (b 20/3/181813)
Thomas (b abt. 1816) he was a boatman but eventually also went to Leicester
Edward (b. abt 1821)

Being Boat people they would have travelled up and down the Canal system and in and out of the record systems.  i would like to know where Edward snr and Jnr came from.  Who was Alice and where did she come from.  What happened to Mary and Edward Jnr.  any ideas of where to look for boat people.

Flintshire / Re: Riley's in Buckley, Flintshire

I have just a search for "Buckley" on Roots web sites.  Ignoring the family name locations are split between Buckley in Flintshire and Buckley in Lancashire.  however a third group appear to put a Buckley in northamptonshire in and around 1800 to 1820.  I also found references to Long Buckley, Low Buckby and Long. Buckley. are these one and the same place in Northamptonshire.

It gets very confusing.  i wish my ancestor had been a bit more specific.

Hi Chris and others.  This is all most interesting stuff which I am going to explore.  I have been looking at the Rochdale Buckley and the Rochdale Canal.  That seems to make some sense.  I have looked in some Parish Records for the Rochdale area and there are some Riley's there but not mine.

I will explore the other suggestion and see what I find.

Thanks Chris for your comments.  Joseph Riley only appears to the 1841 and 1861 Census.  In the 1841, census he is recorded as "not in the county" ie not born in Leicestershire.  On the 1861, his place of birth is shown only as Buckley with no county.  So Buckley in Flintshire was a guess.  Since I posted the original message I have found that his father was Edward Riley whose occupation on Joseph's marriage certificate in 1840 is "Boatman".  I have the growing suspicion that my guess at Buckley in Flintshire may not be correct as you suggest.

Joseph's life in Leicestershire was as a railway porter and his fathers occupation as a boatman does not sound very welsh.  In the Hawarden Parish Record from 1801 - 1820 there is list of a Riley family but not mine.

Lancashire or Yorkshire may be more likely but where is "Buckley"
