Thanks Annie65115.
I can't find anything for Thomas other than the 1841 census either.

I've searched Harriet and there's no Harriet Akiens from the start of registration up to the end of 1840 so I think she's another brick wall.

Wow, you guys have been busy.  I've been looking at John and Susannah's children.
I think they had a second set of twins. Elizabeth Susannah and Thomas  were both born in 1833..
I also have Harriet Akiens aged 2 on the 1841 census but can find no birth for her. I'm wondering if she wSSusanna Akiens' (Green) grandchild as she wS born in 1939, 6 years after John's death.
Thanks again for all the information you've found. I'm very grateful.

Thanks Willsy and David.
Interesting that Susannah's parents were Catholic. I wonder if that's why I can't find baptisms for Mary Ann Akiens and a couple of the other children  of Susannah and John. The ones I've found appear to be c of e. Christenings.

I did wonder if William Green Akiens was my next step in the journey back so that information is very helpful.

The additional information on Susannah is great and it certainly looks like the John Akiens  I'm looking for is indeed this one, which again is very helpful.
Thank you all so much for the help, I feel we've made some good progress on a family brick wall.

Thank you Trish and David for the information.
From all you've shared with me I l think Susannah Green is more likely to be the right person and also think that the John born 1879 and died 1931 is my John.

William Knight and Mary Ann Akiens were my Great Great Grandparents and as William was a witness of 2 of his wife's siblings marriages I think that either he was a friend of both brothers or that the two families shared a friendship or some other connection.

It's difficult to see why both William and Mary Ann should be living separately with their respective families  in 1841 unless they married without consent as they would both have been aged between 16 and 19 when they married in 1840.

Hopefully I will be able to take this line further back now that I have the details of John and Susannag sorted.

Thank you again for the help. I hope this is not too full of mistakes, I unfortunately dropped my phone this morning and shattered the screen so it's a bit difficult to read what I'm writing at present.

Thank you Trish1180 and
Annie65115
I thought I was losing the plot when I couldn't find anything related to my Akiens family from the details on the family trees I saw.
I'll take a look at the Leicester St Margaret ones and see how it fits all in with what I know. Thank you so much for the help.

Leicestershire / John Akiens 1795-1845 Belgrave

Hi all, I'm looking for some help with my Akiens (Akins, Akens)
I've found a tree that lists a number of Akiens ancestors. It actually has complete birth and death dates though I'd suspect the birth dates are more likely baptism.
I wanted to find the records so that I have some sort of paper trail so got busy on ancestry and FindMyPast but for some reason I can't access the baptism images for any of my Akiens. I've tried for several days now but I get what looks like a button that doesn't work. Therefore I can't browse the parish registers to find the information I need to confirm the dates on the tree.
So. Starting with John Akiens who was born in Belgrave on possibly 22/2/1795 and married Susannah Thacker of Market Harborough  on 4/9/818.
I wondered if anyone could check these dates for me please also if anyone could find John and Susannah on the 1841 census. I'd be very grateful for any help you can give. TIA

Thank you q98. . I'm not sure. I am going to try again to take a photo of the record and post to here. Not sure why I can't upload the photo I already have though.

I'm afraid his civilian trade was redacted for some reason. So all I know about him is that he was an able Seaman when he was lost at sea and that he had gained 'a badge?'
Sadly I cannot trace him in NI nor in Britain. The 1926 census has been lost and he does not appear on the 1921 England and Wales census.
I can find no trace of a marriage to my late aunt and need to buy a certificate to confirm he was the father of her son. The only reason I know of him is because the son entered that my aunt was the Widow of Thomas Bates able Seaman on her death certificate in 1969. Sadly there is no one left alive who can give me more information.l but i feel he needs to be on my tree and in the family story so I thought I'd write a bit about his life and death in the navy.
Unfortunately the records are not as clear as the army ones and I have no experience of sailors to go on.

World War Two / Able Seaman Thomas Bates

I'm looking at the service record for Able Seaman Thomas Bates  born in Belfast In Antrim in 1916. It doesn't contain a lot of personal information so doesn't provide details like who got his war gratuity or where he lived at the time of volunteering in March 1935  but given his place in my Leicester family it seems he must have been in Leicester in at least 1939/40, which would be useful to me to clear up a secret. Thomas died in the sinking of HMS Gloucester on 22/5/1941.
Anyway, I'm not completely clear on what some of the entries say.  Not sure if I'm allowed to post photos but I'm struggling with a ship named something along the lines of St Ang???r and something that looks like (Acaste) written next to the ship's name. On the above listing of the ship it says (Watch)
Also what are the columns entitled Non-substantive, among other entries.
I believe the times he was serving on board Drake 1 and 2 were possibly times when he was 'at home base' even if the ship was not docked in Devonport.
I'm happy to post photos if allowed and would greatly appreciate any help in fully understanding this record.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.
