Dublin / Looking for Mary Ann BRADY, born c.1848, Dublin
« on: Monday 05 October 20 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

My g-g-grandmother Mary Ann BRADY, daughter of John BRADY (see below) and Elizabeth BRADY (nee INNIS), was born circa 1848 in Dublin.  I am completely unfamiliar with searching Irish ancestry (the rest of my UK ancestors are from Kent), and I am hoping that some of the sleuths on this site can help me find details of Mary's birth and/or baptism.

Mary's marriage certificate and death certificate both give her father's name as John BRADY, and the marriage certificate gives his occupation as "Gardener".  Other than that, I haven't been able to uncover anything about her family with certainty.  I am unsure where or when John BRADY married Elizabeth INNIS, or whether they had any other children.

I'm also keen to find when Mary came out to Australia.  I have a child Mary BRADY of the right age on the ship "Omega" from Plymouth to Melbourne in 1854.  She is listed as one of a family of seven from Dublin, but the two accompanying adults are named as Patrick and Elizabeth BRADY (the only sign of a "John" appears to be an older sibling also on board, aged ten years).  Any assistance with that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Kent / Looking for Ann and Margaret CONNELL, circa 1810 and 1815
« on: Monday 05 October 20 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have Ann and Margaret CONNELL, who were daughters of Charles CONNELL and Mary CONNELL (nee CLEARY), born circa 1810 and 1815 in Cork and Sheerness respectively.  I am hoping that some of the sleuths on this site can help me find their births and/or baptisms.

Ann and her younger sister Margaret were transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1833.  According to their convict indent records, Ann was born in Cork and Margaret was born in Sheerness, Kent (this is corroborated by her death certificate).  Margaret's death certificate gives Charles CONNELL's occupation as "Navy Officer".  I am unsure where or when Charles married Mary CLEARY, but I believe they had other children as well (there is a Charles CONNELL listed on Margaret's death certificate, who I believe may be her brother).

Ann was a married woman by the time she was transported (married name MILLER), but I haven't been able to track down her marriage.  Any assistance with that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Australia / NSW State Library - Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories
« on: Friday 04 September 20 08:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi there RCers,

Just wondering if there are any RCers who may be regular visitors to the NSW State Library, and who might be able to assist with searching and copying some entries in Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories?  Unfortunately the State Library of Victoria is not taking copy requests at the moment.

I am hoping to obtain copies of the entries for the town of Alexandra in the Bailliere's Victorian Post Office Directories for 1868, 1871/1872 and 1875.  In particular I am keen to see whether the 1868, 1871/1872 and 1875 editions have an entry for John ROFE and/or the Star Hotel, similar to the attached (from the 1869 edition, which is available on Google Books).

It appears that the NSW State Library might only have physical copies of the directories.  I'm not sure whether they also have them in microform.

Any assistance would be kindly appreciated.

Thanks JM, much appreciated.  I was just looking for some context as to how that fitted into the article as a whole.  It's not entirely clear, but the article seems to imply that the purse located next to Mrs Edmund-Walls' body subsequently went missing.

I'll wait and see what the death certificate reveals, although presumably it doesn't contain her parents' details so I'm not sure how helpful it will be.  Perhaps there was an inquest?  I'll touch base with NSW State Archives to see if they have any further information.  Although, if the case is still open, any records are probably still sealed...

No worries Meegan.  I'm in Brisbane and I have a membership with SLQ, so feel free to let me know if there's anything I can help with.

Can anyone with access to NSW State Library e-resources help me out me with a transcript of the "Clueless" article in the Daily Telegraph (Sydney) on 8 October 2017, page 34?

Hi Meegan,

You could try the Queensland Telephone Directory 1931-1959 on FindMyPast.

SLQ have Queensland Post Office Directories, 1868-1949, but they may not be recent enough for you.

Cheers, Justin

Thanks cupoflife, I hadn't seen those but I came across an article in the Sydney Morning Herald on the same day as your article from The Age.  I also found another gazette entry almost identical to the one identified by jorose, but 13 months later.

I've since found 1977 electoral roll entries for the couple in Sydney:  he appears as Phillip Thomas WALLS and she appears as (wait for it)... Lily Irene EDMUNDSoooo close to my great-aunt's married name, and with the day and month of birth the same to boot.  And turns out it's within walking distance of where Charles EDMUNDS was living with Mrs Neta ABBOTT in Redfern in 1968 when he died.

I can't say for sure that this is my Lily Irene EDMUNDS (nee ROFE).  Part of me hopes that it's not, but I think I'm really gonna have to purchase that death certificate from NSW BDM and see what's what.  I note that the parents' names aren't listed on the death register search...

Whoa, now that's an interesting find, and I see that NSW BDM have a corresponding death record for an "Irene EDMUND-WALLS".

Thanks jorose, I'll definitely have to look into that.
