Occupation Interests / Re: Occupation Buck Maker

Thanks for the suggestion Valda. I think you're probably right. Although it looks more like Buck, from the other hand writing on the page it could arguably be brick & this obviously fits better with Kiln!! Strange how the obvious sometimes passes you by!

Can anyone tell me what a buck maker did? My 4th great grandfather gives his occupation as Buck Maker on the 1841 census. His residence was Buck Kiln in Henley on Thames which was either on or close to the Fawley Court Estate

Many thanks both!

Tati

You have found, I'm fairly sure, the family I have been looking for in 1841!!!Thomas was living with (Aunt) Ellen in 51 (born 1806 & married then to Daniel Clinton) & her marriage certificate gives Henry as her father. All appears to fit.

Brilliant ;D

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Baptisms - Hodkinson - Ribchester
« on: Monday 01 May 06 13:04 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in a baptism recorded on 2 Dec 1827 in Ribchester.
I think Thomas Hod(g)kinson may have been my gt gt grandfather.
Unfortunately only his mothers name is recorded (Alice Hod(g)kinson) on IGI

So I'm wondering ::) did Alice have any other children baptised in Ribchester & is there any record of a marriage involving an Alice to a Hod(g)kinson?

In later years Thomas gives his place of birth as Longridge (1851), Hothersall (1881) & Huddersall (1891)....

Perhaps Alice was unmarried?

Any info. would be fantastic

It seems our Ellen was a spinster, aged 40, when she married Daniel. I'm now wondering if she could have been Thomas' Aunt.

The marriage certificate gives the name/occupation of Ellen's father - Henry Hodgkinson / farmer. Witnesses to the mariage were Henry and Alice Hodgkinson.

I have since found an IGI record of a christening - Thomas Hodgkinson 2 Dec 1827 at Ribchester (which is very close to Hothersall & Longridge). This names Alice Hodgkinson as Thomas' mother but once again ... no father!! ???

Hi Marie

I was married at St. Peter's Prestbury. If you don't have any luck tracking the records at record offices etc., I understand that the parish hold a number of records in safe keeping.

Be great if you could - many thanks!  :)

I think I also need to go and see the original parish record of Matthew's marriage to Mary in order to get Matthew's fathers name.
