London and Middlesex / William Woodall Teacher of Mathematics
« on: Sunday 11 February 24 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.
I'm hoping you more familiar with London than I can help and more specifically the Hackney area.I'm trying to find information about a William Woodall, a Maths Teacher in the 19th century. Where he may have taught etc. He was born in Newark, Nottingham in 1801 but moved to London to teach. he married a Caroline Farrell in Kensington, and between them raised a daughter and five sons. With a father teaching Maths it's no surprise all five became 'Clerks" (Conveyancing, Stock Brokers, Bill Brokers and Wine Merchant) Their eldest also a William went on to become a Solicitor. The four census's between 1841 and 1871 show them living at different addresses around the Islington and then Hackney area. By 1871 age 70 he had retired and he died 1876. That is all I know about him. Any guidance on where I could find more greatly appreciated. Was there a major school in this area (maybe still is?) Hoping local knowledge can help but anything anyone can add to this story would be good. Thanks.

Hi everyone. I'd be grateful if anyone could help with deciphering any of this wedding cert. I know its between William Ward and Elizabeth Campion, 6th Dec 1886. he a bachelor, Labourer she a widow Charwomen. I can't read the address, Walker st. maybe? I thought her father was Robert William Doubleday but that doesn't look like "William" to me. Think it say deceased for his father? can't read the occupations of the two fathers.
TIA

Hi Karenp, only just noticed your post. If you are still here and still looking to compare notes, I’m an Elliott and my Elliotts came from the Sowe Waste area. Females mostly silk ribbon weavers, men coal miners. I’d be happy to see if my research yours, there were not that many Elliotts in Walsgrave-on-Sowe so highly likely

Yes, the dropsy could be from the heart not  functioning properly ,fluid  collects in the legs.
Also  abdominal cavity and lungs .
Diuretic tablets can be given but ultimately the heart fails.

As has been stated the kidneys are affected also and do not filter out all they should so simply put the body poisons itself .
Very painful and distressing .
Very fast answers from the first posters. !
Viktoria.

I should have said this death was a 53 year old male in 1887, would those tablets be available then?
