Patrick Hurley
Rachel Rees

Marriage Mar 1878 Bedwelty

I can see them in 1881/1891 but not 1901/1911.

I seem to recall my Gran saying Rachel was perhaps an alcoholic

What was his mothers maiden name to check births?

There is a Daniel age 11 down as nephew on census.

The Daniel born in Cardiff Mar 1900 has mothers name McCarthy.  Is that the right one?

What links Daniel as a brother to the other two gentlemen?

This is curious isn't it, I am only going on what my Grandad told my mother that Daniel was his little brother, same surname.  I can only find where Daniel died, nothing else.  I think I found that James was in the Welsh Regiment 1st/5th Bn and might have fought in Gallipoli before being transferred to Egypt, where he died.  My Grandad was a territorial as well, who signed up and he told my mother he marched passed the Cemetery James was buried in and he never knew he was in there.  My Grandad cried every time he heard Danny Boy sung.

James in Rhymney 1880 but Daniel(l) I cannot find out and that is really strange.  I found them on the census in 1891 when I searched for my Grandad (see below).  The Hurleys seem to fluctuate between Cardiff and Rhymney, Monmouthshire.  I think Daniel was born circa 1900 but I cannot find anything at all on him, very strange indeed.

Name   William J Hurley
Gender   Male
Birth   Circa 1890
  Rhymney, Monmouthshire
Residence   1891
27 Nora St, Cardiff, Cardiff, Wales
Age   1
Language   English
Father   Patrick Hurley
Mother   Rachel Hurley
Siblings   James Hurley, Thomas Hurley

I meant to post this in another thread but lost it now.  Apologies for the random post!

My grandad William Hurley who fought in WW1 lost 2 brothers in the war, James Hurley and his little brother Daniell Hurley ( died at Mametz Wood, 10th July 1916, service no 19314, actually only L , so Daniel, I think he lied about his age so added the L).  I am doing my best to research the Mametz Wood battle but I would love to find out more details of how he was killed, or probably killed.  As for James I have hit a brick wall so any information would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Kev

Daniel Hurley was my Grandad's brother and I would love to speak to anyone who knows something about him.  Some of the information above is incorrect.

Daniel, one L not two LL's, was the youngest brother of my Grandad William John Hurley.  He had 2 other brother's James who died in Egypt during the first world war and Thomas who I sadly know little of.  His parents were Patrick and Rachel Hurley.

Best wishes,

Kevin
