i am sad to say that I just discovered that Hugh Hughes, son of John Hughes and Mary McKenna is not the same person as my grandfather, Owen Hughes.  I found the death register for Hugh Hughes 10 Oct 1920 who resided at 10 South Row Summerlee, Coatbridge.  My grandfather Owen remains a brick wall in my research.  I suppose there were two couples named John Hughes and Mary (McKenna) Hughes in the same area! Seems so unlikely.  Oh well.

In response to some questions and suggestions...
I have now viewed 1911 census for Owen Hughes, M, boarder, age 20, 652/2 18/10, a tube worker in Coatdyke, Coatbridge, Scotland, and he lived with William Lennon (head) and others from Ireland at 523 Main St.  Owen's age seems off compared to my grandfather but perhaps it was a recording error or one to make him more employable.

The valuation roll in 1914 for James Hughes (a cousin perhaps?)  has him as a tenant in Airdrie at 43 Kippen St.  My grandfather Owen Hughes's marriage license (known to definitely be his) states that his address was 44 Kippen St. so there seems to be a definite connection.

I have never used valuation rolls before.  Thanks for leading me there SCOTMUM.  These, no doubt, are my grandparents: HUGHES, OWEN, Tenant Occupier HOUSE 16/I/1 EAST STEWART STREET, OLD MONKLAND, 1920 and Jessie was still there in 1925: HUGHES  JESSIE  Tenant Occupier    HOUSE 16I/1 EAST STEWART STREET    OLD MONKLAND   1925

The mention of James Hughes by MonicaL has me curious about a connection between him and my grandparents, but I could not figure it out based on the tree with link that was mentioned.  I did download his marriage register which mentions his E Stewart St. Coatbridge address that my grandMOTHER had on HER marriage paperwork as her street address.  Too coincidental to be unrelated.

Does Hugh Hughes seem to be the same person as Owen Hughes? More research to continue.  I need to see if I can find a birth record for Owen in Armagh or more info to merge my Owen to Hugh.  I will continue to use the valuation records.  I have spent a fortune on Scotland's People but love when I find a piece of the puzzle.

Hi Agadowey,
Sorry for the typo.  My grandfather, Owen Hughes, went to Tacony, Pennsylvania, a site where many immigrants from Scotland landed.  There are a Monument to Scottish Immigrants and Irish Memorial there to commemorate the courage, skill, and tenacity of these immigrants.  From the ship's manifest on my grandfather's journey, I discovered his connection to McShane and his intent to stay with him but know very little of their time together.  Thank you for the link to Andrew's Find a Grave.  I will continue to see if I can learn more about the McShane Hughes connection.  It may help me learn about the early days of my grandfather's time in the USA.  I don't know what he did in PA or when he moved on to New York.  Thanks for the help!  I am attaching a photo of the memorial in Tacony.

Good point!        "There was a lot of travelling back and forth between Scotland and Ayrshire and it's not uncommon for birthplaces to get muddled between the two with a person born in Scotland saying they were born in Ulster or visa versa. Irish-born parents might have sent their Scottish born children back to Ireland to stay with relatives..."

I think that may have been the case because he was so young when his mother passed away.
Thanks for your feedback!

Dear Scotmum, Dundee, and others,

As a newbie on here, I had no idea how helpful everyone could be! Scotmum, your comments about his birthday seem quite likely.  I guess his birthday was selected rather than exact.  I will research the Hugh Hughes born in Scotland further to confirm that he is, indeed, my grandfather.  I have only found him (Hugh) in the 1891 and 1901 census for Scotland and (Owen) 1930 and 1940 in the USA.  I will continue to look for him in the 1911 census though.

In the future, I will try to include all relevant documents that I am aware of to save others time in researching.  Sorry that I didn't list everything I had.  I thought it would be too much for people to sort through.  I was unsure that Hugh and Owen were the same person so I did not want to send anyone in the wrong direction. I've learned that this site has great researchers who don't mind reading lengthy bits of information for a clear starting point.  Lesson learned. :)

This is my tree on Ancestry as noted by Dundee: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/153502663/person/172029131363/facts

I welcome suggestions and look forward to helping others!

Thanks everyone!
Jessie

I'm learning to navigate the messaging and responses.  I am not sure if I should be using the REPLY option at the top of the thread or some sort of direct messaging.

Oh my gosh! This message from Debra is incredible!

               "That is the correct birth.

                Debra  :)

I had not seen this birth record.  I think that it clearly proves that all of my grandfather's documents are incorrect.  He was born in Scotland rather than Ireland!  And even the date is different.  I am puzzled about why he did this!  Perhaps after his mother died - so did the accurate information?!?!

I have been unable to find his Irish record of birth and now know why! I think that it is safe to say that Owen and Hugh are the same person if the names of the parents are almost exactly same Mary/Mary Ann and John) and the year of birth is very close.  On this document, it states that his mother was from Co Armagh where my grandfather always claimed to have been born.

Debra and others helping me, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Monica L,
Yes, I do have the marriage info for the couple that I believe to be his parents, John Hughes and Mary McKenna in Lurgan, Armagh in 1866, but I cannot figure out why all of his documents state that he was born in Ireland if he was born in Scotland. So I am trying to definitively link Hugh from that family and my grandfather Owen together as the same person. Thanks for helping.  By the way, I am trying to reply to each message in the thread but am having a bit of trouble maneuvering the site.
Gratefully,
Jessie

Hi Rosie,

Thank you for letting me know that Mary hasn't been active in some time.  I am just starting to learn how to use Roots Web.  Amazed at the help already!  Looking forward to working with people on here.

Thanks for the prompt response for help!  Our family has many original documents for Owen.  We have his British passport stating "tube worker, born Co Armagh, Ireland, 17 Mar 1886"; Petition for Naturalization with same d.o.b. and born Armagh;   Certificate of Naturalization which states former nationality British;  his death certificate from New York which says born Ireland, 17 Mar 1887, parents John and Mary Ann, wife Jessie; extract of Marriage to Jessie  in 1914 at All Saints in Airdrie, his address listed as Kippen St. in Airdrie, his parents John Hughes (whinstone quarryman) and mother Mary Ann Hughes m.s. McKenna (deceased).  There are no Hughes witnesses on the marriage papers.  Only a Henry Devenny and a sister of the bride.  I have a copy of the ship's manifest from his original trip to the US (found online).  He went to stay with someone named Andrew McShane in Pennsylvania, USA.  (His mother passed away when he was about 9 and he was supposedly sent to live with relatives for some time if that helps...)  Oddly his gravestone says dob was 1888.

Owen's family definitely seems to be the same family that moved to Scotland where he later met my grandmother.

All the pieces seem to fit except for the fact that the family seemed to already be living in Scotland when he was born - not Armagh, Ireland.

I am pleased to know that the names Hugh and Owen were used interchangeably.

Thanks to everyone.  I cannot believe how quickly people are trying to help.  I appreciate it more than you know!

Jessie
