Midlothian / Re: South Lodge Kirknewton

Monica, you mentioned that the new census may help finding a common household for James (father), Agnes (daughter?), and Elizabeth (sister?) Anderson.
I have been trying all different combinations but am a complete novice. Do you have any suggestions?
If Agnes was listed as “daughter of” on Margaret’s birth cert in 1929 might we think she is still young herself at time of census in 1921?
Elizabeth was listed as dairy maid in 1929, what typical age range does that indicate?
Thanks so much for any helpful insights

Armed Forces / Any leads from photo

Hi, I was hoping someone can help me identify any information from the attached photo? This was in my grandfather's very few belongings and must have been of significance to him. Any suggestions of time frame/military branch etc from the uniform would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Thank you. One other bit of information I received from my mum over the weekend was that the use of orphanage and "children's home" was used by my grandmother, so it isn't clear what level of home life she was raised in. My mum mentioned that even as an adult my gran was mostly unable to read or write, so it does seem like she was not educated, but unsure if this was usual for a child born on the late 1920s?

Hi Monica, sorry for the delay. The first image was of the Kirknewton birth cert, and the one below is of the Edinburgh/George Square birth cert. I can't see any different info between them. Still trying to find some links to who James, Agnes, and Elizabeth are. Thanks again.

Thank you both so much. Very interesting indeed, why they had hospital births. I wonder if this was age related (especially in Agnes if she was young as we suspect from the birth cert).
I did note that baby Kenneth Wick Anderson died on June 12th, so perhaps the delay in registering was due to this happening in the same home?

Monica, is there a significance to them all being double registrations? Sorry if this is a silly question, I am a beginner at this!

Thanks Dorrie and Monica. I agree that I don’t have too much confidence in that 1901 census looking into it more.
Good possibility Agnes was born after 1911 if she was still referred to as “daughter of” on Margaret’s birth cert in 1929.
I’ll certainly keep digging at the Orkney connection and good idea about Douglas

Thanks Monica. In the 1911 census for Kirknewton the 2 entries for James Anderson don't match, and when I try combinations of James Anderson and Agnes or Elizabeth Anderson broadening to Midlothian there are >20 matches. Not sure how to narrow this down or what the next step I should take. Unfortunate that James, Elizabeth and Agnes are all common names. I would love to find out who Agnes was. I have many DNA matches to Orkney Andersons some of whom immigrated to Manitoba Canada Hudson Bay Company , but I can't seem to work down to a Kirknewton connection.

unbelievable! William Wick, gardener at Kirknewton House 1925 and 1930 same time as James Anderson is there as a Byresman according to VR.
I have been trying to figure out my genetic link to DNA matches sharing Mowat, Sinclair, and Nicholson surnames all from Orkney area, and go figure William Wick born in Hoy, Orkney to mother Mary Ann Sinclair Nicholson.
So....he impregnates both Elizabeth and Agnes in 1929?
I am finding an Elizabeth Anderson daughter of James Anderson in 1901 census, but not seeing any records of Agnes and no birth records for Agnes Anderson in Kirknewton in a year range that would make sense.
