Thanks for the census info. I've seen Thomas Tripney and Janet Tassie Donaldson when looking for some birhts but hadn't connected Thomas to John Tripney and Mary Johnston.

In 1818 it would be an entry from the parish records. These can be viewed online now at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (cost 5 credits to view an image). Often the OPRs will just give the names of the bride and groom and when the banns are read and no details of parents.

Had a look at the entry on Scotlandspeople and it reads:

George Mole Mercht in Glasgow and Janet Haldane resident there. Married 21st Septemr by Dr Wm Taylor one of the ministers of Glasgow.

The census was actually taken in the Royal Artillery Barracks in Portsmouth.
As it was an institution the relation column is headed position in institution and I think that it has been mistranscribed and should read:

Private Sappers and Miners at present sick patients in hospital

There is something between private and sappers which may just be a capital R(abbreviation for Royal?). His occupation is Royal Sappers and Miners.

The Lighter Side / Re: Generation gaps
« on: Thursday 17 May 07 17:21 BST (UK)  »
My g grandparents born between 1882-1902 (20 years)
My gg grandparents born between 1832 and 1883 (51 years)
My ggg grandparents born between 1800 and 1863 (63 years)

Lots of gaps with the gggg grandparents but from the ones I know about around 1765-1837 (around 72 years).

Big gap starts as one gg grandfather being 50 when his wife (16 years his junior) gave birth to my g grandfather born in 1882 and a different gg grandmother, who married at 17, gave birth to my g grandmother at 18 in 1901.

Not looked at the certificate but from searching Scotlandspeople looks like Euphemia McDonald/McDougall died in 1913 aged 45 in Greenock East.
Looking at her death cert should will tell you if Duncan was still alive when she died so could narrow down the search for his death.

Lanarkshire / Re: Lanarkshire Coal Mining in 1800s

Hi Ann

I've found this site useful for background to coal mining in Lanarkshire:

http://www.mining-villages.co.uk/index.html

It has lists of accidents in the mines and also has some descriptions of the housing provided by the collieries from the 1910 housing report. These give general descriptions such as the number of 1 or 2 roomed houses in a particular street/area and the age of the houses so although its 1910 some of those houses would have been around in the 1880s.
