I have his profession from his son's Marriage Certificates and Death Certficate. If I have my dates right, his son was only 5 when he died so I wonder now if it was maybe a case of the son mis-remembering, or the wife Harriet trying to let her son believe his dad was a little more than a labourer.

His son Sydney (1867-1932) baptised his first born in a Methodist church in Ilfracombe, so at the very least the family appear to have been practicing Methodists.

It's a bit odd that the children are baptised in the parish church
St Austell
7 Nov 1858 William James son of William Sydney, labourer, & Harriet Hosking
16 Feb 1863 Elizabeth Jane daughter of William Sidney, labourer, & Harriet Hoskin
24 Dec 1865 Emily May daughter of William Sidney, labourer, & Harriett Hosking
2 June 1867 Sidney son of Sidney, labourer, & Harriet Hoskin
5 April 1871 Mary Ellen daughter of William Sydney, labourer & Harriett Hoskin

What do you mean when you say it was odd they were baptised in the parish church? Would a different practice usually be followed?

The son Sydney mentioned here born 1867 is the one family member I have most questions about. I’ve linked him to this family based on information obtained from his marriage and death certificates where it lists his mother’s and fathers full names and father’s profession. (Sydney Hoskin, Wesleyan Missionary/minister depending on the certificate, and Harriet Woolcock/Wilcox depending on the certificate). I think his last marriage certificate lists his mother as Harriet Revell formerly Hoskin m.s. Woolcock.

Is there a possibility I have the wrong family? Anything else I might be missing?

Amazing, thank you. I was sure I'd searched for a Christina Brown in Aberlady and came up with nothing but I must have had an incorrect filter on the year when searching.

The information on her parents came from the only marriage certificate I found on Scotland's People for a Robert Brown and Christina Sinclair. I'd taken the parents names from her death certificate. She died Oct 27th 1894 from a puerperal (?) fever which I understand to be caused by problems in childbirth. The informant on the DC was Sydney Hoskin in Partick. Christina died fairly young at the age of 25. Her daughter Christina also died young at only 22 (I have death certificates for both).

I have the birth certificates for the other three children, available here https://imgur.com/a/rNq4uIT. Sydney is the sole informant for all births.

Sydney married again twice after his supposed marriage to Christina and I have both of those. I think he lied about his father's occupation on those so he may have lied on some of these certificates also.

Thanks again for your help

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Christina Sinclair (Ford?) Brown - Abt 1869 - 1894

Hi,

I'm trying to track down anyone who knows more about Christina Brown. She had several children with my great great grandfather before she died and he subsequently had my great grandfather with another woman. I cannot find her birth certificate, and I cannot find a marriage certificate between her and my gg grandfather. There is a location and date listed on the birth certificates of their children (although it's a different date on each of the three children). I also haven't been able to find a birth certificate for their eldest child. Below is what I know:

Father: Robert Brown, joiner (Abt 1838 - ?), son of Robert Brown and Margaret Brown (m.s. Dixon)
Mother: Christina Sinclair, (Abt 1841 - ?), daughter of David Sinclair and Margaret Sinclair (m.s. Turner (?))
Parents married 24th Sept 1858, Aberlady

She supposedly married Sydney Hoskin April 1888 or September 1884 or October 1886 in St Saviour Church, Dartmouth but I have checked the records and couldn't find anything.

Sydney and Christina had four children:
Sydney Hoskin (1889 - ?) - can't find any record of his birth
Christina Sinclair-Bailey Hoskin (1890-1914)
Robert William Hoskin (1893-1966)
Harriet Maggie Hoskin (1894-1895)

It seems that Christina died shortly after giving birth to Harriet after experiencing complications.

Does anyone have any more information?

Thanks!

Thanks so much for all that information. I'm really interested to see what comes back on his birth and death certificate to see if it verifies that the info here is correct. I had found some of that information already, but you've brought in a few extra sources that corroborate which is positive.

I've done some more searching today and found two newspaper snippets. One which appears to confirm the birth of William Sydney's son Sydney (who would be my great great grandfather - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/74845414/), and another which mentions a Reverend William Hoskin in St Austell in 1850 (https://www.newspapers.com/clip/74966338/). He's unlikely to be a member of my direct family but I thought it was interesting nonetheless. Does anyone know if the letters B.A. after his name refer to a Bachelor's degree, or is that referring to something else altogether?

As a side point, before I found out I was wasting time searching in the Wesleyan Methodist Church's archives, I'd already purchased accesss to one of the Wesleyan Periodical collections with the British Online Archive, so if anyone would like anything looked up there over the next month while I have access I'd be happy to do so. It's this collection in particular that I have access to for the next 30 days: https://microform.digital/boa/collections/3/wesleyan-and-primitive-methodist-periodicals-1744-1960

Thanks everyone for your help so far, it's much appreciated!

Thank you! These are great. I hadn't been able to find the actual parish records so I really appreciate being able to finally see them!

I'm hoping I'll be able to get some more information about his parents when his birth certificate gets here. "William and Mary Hoskin" weren't exactly a uniquely named couple in 1800s Cornwall  ;D

Thanks for the info! Even though it's ended up being a bit of a dead end this will save me hours of researching in the wrong place.

If I find anything interesting on his birth or death certificates I'll let you know!

Thanks Jen - that matches the census records I have against him too but I was confused why there would be a mismatch between the profession listed on his son's marriage certificate and the census here. Would him being a 'lay preacher' account for that or is there a chance that his son has taken some poetic license with his dad's backstory? His son moved away, first to Edinburgh and then to Glasgow, was married at least twice, possibly three times, and his youngest child was born out of wedlock to a woman with a bit of a checkered past, so this could be feasible.

I noticed that Sydney died relatively young, would there be a possibility that he began his work with the church after the 1871 census and died in service?

I have him as (William) Sydney Hoskin, born St Mewan/St Austell in Cornwall 1837, died 1872. I've ordered his birth certificates and death certificates but don't have them yet.

The only 'confirmed' information I have for him comes from his son Sydney's marriage certificates. One from 1895 where his profession is listed as Minister - Wesleyan Methodist Church, and the second from 1907 where he appears to be listed as a missionary. His name is given as Sydney Hoskin on both and he is noted as deceased on both. His wife was Harriet Woolcock/Wilcox. I have no idea where he traveled. Would be delighted to hear from anyone who had any info!

His son Sydney's marriage certificates are here:
