Limerick / Baptisms of Adare Parish 1804-1826 - Royal Spear- Mary Wallace
« on: Monday 25 September 23 00:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello there,
I have seen many references to early baptisms of the Anglican St Mary's church of Adare Parish in Limerick in a family document sent to me by a cousin who eventually referred me to a Mary Wallace, who died soon after I made contact with her and she sent me a limited amount of data that she had on my family in adare. I was making this post hoping that someone would be able to help me to get a copy of whatever registers she had from St Mary's early history. Mary had told me that she received the registers from the late Royal Spear, who I presume had either been able to copy them from before the fire in 1922 (as after the fire only the 1826-1878 registers survived) or he got a copy of a copy, and she said that what she got was badly damaged.
If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you Kim and Anne. It seems that James A*K*N of Cadgerloan was not the James Aitkenhead who married Anne Fleming, as I just found the baptism of William Aicken, b. 5/3/1741 in Cadgerloan to James. Thank you for all the info.

Thank you! The family was indeed in Monnery, Francis being in lower in 1821 census. I did not know that there were baotisms for Frances, Mary and William! They had a daughter Jane in 1814, is her baptism recorded?

The 1861 census for Mary says that she was born near Edinburgh. Maybe she wasn't connected to the Roxburghshire Olivers?

I have, Frank has so much good information! Unfortunately it is a one name study, which does not extend to the Oliver’s. Thank you for mentioning it though!

Limerick / Early Pyper Gunsmiths in Rathkeale?
« on: Sunday 31 July 22 14:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I recently found this online, and I am not sure how to find anything more on the Pyper gunsmith's mentioned. The parish registers of Rathkeale do not say that any Pyper's had this job at this time. The only Pyper gunsmith I know of is Julius Pyper 1840-1908.

There's also an old family story about the Pyper's killing each other in Ireland, maybe this is how it applies?
Thanks

Lanarkshire / William Rankin Family
« on: Sunday 03 July 22 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am looking for more information regarding the family of William Rankin who married Jean Shaw in 1776. He had 4 known children, James (60 in 1841 Census in Riggend, New Monkland), John 1779-bef1841, Jean 1782-1866 and Robert 1786-1826. I am looking for data on John & James's families, and data on William's origins would be greatly appreciated.  William was said to have been a farmer of Linnyett near Longriggend, and his son was living in Riggend village, but later moved to Ontario.

James Rankin b 1776-1781 md Margaret ____, children Wm 1807-1809 Thos 1819-1903 md Jane Rankin Jno 1825-1883 md Eliz Lamb. Illegitimate daughter Janet 1801-1874 with Mary (Waddell) Collinswho md Alex Pender.
John Rankin b 1779 md Jane Ferguson, children Agnes dy Agnes 1810- Jane dy Wm 1816- Geo 1819- Jno 1821 Jane 1824 md Thos Rankin

Any info on any Rankins that lived in Riggend would be welcome.
Does anyone know where/what "Linnyett" is?
Any info on finding an exact birthdate of Janet, I can't find a kirk session record or a baptism that is her.
Also, any work on the wife of James Rankin would be welcome. She was in the Ontario census of 1871 with her son William.

Lanarkshire / Niece/Uncle marriage laws 1820s?
« on: Monday 20 June 22 01:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

In researching different families in East Kilbride, I came across Jean Kirkland who married Wm Aitkenhead in 1829, see the 1841 census below in Tuphall, East Kilbride.

William Aikenhard 81
Jane Aikenhard   45
Matthew Kirkland 99
John Kirkland 12
Elizabeth Young 15
David Wallace 28
Robert Pagen 20
John Browne 20

Jane Kirkland was baptized on 2 Apr 1786 in East Kilbride to Matthew Kirkland, and married (?) to James Young, and had a daughter Elizabeth on 10 Mar 1821.

Matthew was married on 26 May 1776 to Euphan Aitkenhead, Archibald Kirkland was married in 1764 to Margaret Aitkenhead. Archibald was baptized in 1739 to Robert Kirkland (md Margaret Browning), and Mathew was baptized in 1743.
Matthews children were: Euphan, Robert, Margaret, Jean, Agnes.
Archibald’s children were: Robert, Mary, Jean, Martha, Euphan, Alexander.

Margaret was baptized in 1744 to Alexander Aitkenhead and Jean Craig, they had a gap in their children from 1748 to 1756 (which the gap isn’t eh baptisms around this time May have contributed), looking at the similarities in the namings of Euphan and Margaret’s children, it seems likely that they were sisters.
The question I am asking is which William is the husband of Jean Kirkland and age 81-86 in April 1841. There are two options, William b 1760 to James and Ann Aitkenhead, and William b 1756 brother of Margaret and Euphan.

Was it illegal for William 1756 and Jean to get married (uncle and niece)? In England they were, but I couldn’t find any restrictions in marriage for Scotland, and figured I’d ask the community here. Hopefully I’ve explained the methodology behind the relationships adequately.
