Australia / Re: Bowraville Cemetery NSW

I posted in another thread by mistake but here it is again, if anybody can help, please.

Hello, my mother's paternal grandmother was an Emily "Molly" Cox who I suspect may be the same "Mollie" mentioned in this thread.  She married a Plowman from Jerseyville and they had a squad of children, including my grandfather.

For some reason my mother always mentioned Bowraville when she talked about going to visit Molly as a child, so perhaps Molly went back to Bowraville to live after her husband died (?). My mother always referred to Molly as 'Molly Cox' and never Nana Plowman, which is odd. She recalls Molly having cows and watching her milk them. I'd ask her to clarify but she died some years back.

I don't understand why Bowraville was significant to my mother in relation to the Cox family when Molly Cox and her husband and kids resided in Jerseyville.

Another strange thing is my grandfather and Molly lived at Jerseyville but went to Alstonville to have my grandfather then returned to Jerseyville and had the rest of their kids.

If anybody can shed any light on any of this, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
Gillian

Can anybody clarify any of this for me?  I don't understand why Bowraville was significant to my mother in relation to the Cox family when Molly Cox and her husband and kids resided in Jerseyville.  Perhaps it was when she visited the rest of the family.

Cumberland / Re: Border Reivers clan names

My great-grandmother was a Little from Stirlingshire and I suspect we may be from Reiver stock. I recently have discovered what Reivers actually were and the curse laid upon them by *that man*.

As my great-grandmother's and grandmother's family name was mentioned in that curse I have taken it very personally and am horrified that such a thing ever occurred. It's witchcraft of the highest order and I am very angry about it and feel very personally attacked by it!

If I ever meet a Dunbar I will not be held responsible for my actions (I probably would be, though, sadly).

We anybody else absolutely horrified by that curse? It's the foulest thing I have ever read and to know it was (most likely) aimed at my family just fills me with fury! I don't care what people did, they didn't deserve that tirade of filth aimed at them and from all the pulpits in the land, no less!

Off to quietly fume and plot revenge on behalf of the Reiving families! Down with the Dunbars (boo, hiss!!)  >:( >:( >:(

Stirlingshire / Little Family of Stirlingshire
« on: Sunday 25 April 21 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello, my great-grandmother was a Little that married a man from Stirlingshire and their daughter married a man from Kilsyth (my grandparents). I so far have not been able to trace any info regarding my great-grandmothers family.

I have recently discovered the Reiving Littles and suspect we may be related. Somebody mentioned that their Little Reiver relative was a Covenanter, as were many in Stirlingshire where my great grandmother resided. I was wondering if anybody knew of any historical political allegiences between Reivers and Covenanters.

I suspect that the politics of the time would have had a large influence on where the Reiving families that didn't move to Ulster actually went after they were cleared out of the border areas. Unfortunately my knowledge of those politics is scant.  If anybody could help posit a guess as to where my Little relatives may have moved to after the clearances, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gillian

Dumfriesshire / Re: Robert Little of Torthorwald 1600/1700s Little Reivers

Hi Mojo47, I don't know that much about the Little family but according to this website https://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/htol/little2.htm Meikledale was a Little stronghold.

My great-grandmother was a Little and married a gentleman from Stirlingshire. They had a daughter (my grandmother) who married a gentleman from Kilsyth, then Stirlingshire, now Lanarkshire.  I don't know where the Littles in my family came from and have only recently discovered the history of the Reiving clans and will eventually get around to seeing if I can link them. I'd say the chances are quite high we are from Reiving clan of Littles.

I was interested in your post because you mentioned Covenanters and Kilsyth was a strongly Covenanter town which could explain how my Littles ended up there if they did come from the Reiving line.

I read all about the curse laid upon the Reiving families and it made my blood run cold. It was just so horrible. I now lay all the bad luck that has ever beset my family at the feet of Gavin Dunbar and if I ever meet a Dunbar I might punch them in the face for old time's sake! (kidding).

Sorry I can't be of more help but your post has helped me with the Covenanter linkage so thanks!

Stirlingshire / Rankin Families of Stirlingshire
« on: Sunday 25 April 21 04:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am a Rankin from one of the Rankin families of Kilsyth. I know there are a few other Rankin families from Kilsyth that are unrelated to us but would assume that we are all distantly related somehow (correct me if you have info otherwise). It would be the holy grail to find out how! :-)

My long-suffering 2nd cousin has painstakingly traced our line back to about 1700 in the Kilsyth area.  My question is where did we all come from? I note there were a lot of Rankins in Ayrshire prior to 1700 and am wondering if we came from one of those families.

Although the idea that we are related to the Pipers of Duart and the McLean clan, is seductive, I can't find any real linkages to that line other than the name Neil being used several times in our family which is an oddity amongst all the James, Johns and Williams.

If anybody has any knowledge of the Rankin clan history prior to Kilsyth and Stirlingshire, I would love to hear it because it's frustrating not to be able to go back further in my own line.

Sorry if this is way too general question, it was just a question i had that I thought I would pop in here and see what info I got that might help.

Thanks,
Gillian Rankin
