Thanks again. I'll get on it and arrange to head in for the day, taking all information in print too :)

I think the same about the flings. Or maybe both just found other partners and split. Thanks again for helping

Re Dublin, might head to the Nation Archives and spend the day in the reading rooms and hopefully find some help. I'm almost certain I've found Stephen's registration form for Dublin City Artilliary Militia from 1890 and would like to speak to somebody who might know more about these records and guide me to more information

Thanks Debra

Your information has helped fill out bits of what I'd already found. I had no idea about baby Joseph. I did find a baptism record for a baby Daniel, but says born only a few months before my grandfather so not to Margaret (although she's named as mother. I will need to check again later today).

It does very much look as though Ms and SH never married

No spinster, just late Fazenfield, formerly Shepherd. Stephen was a dock labourer and grandfather was born 8th July 1895 at no. 2 Court 3 House Titchfield Street Liverpool. Birth registered on 20th August

Spinster. On my granddad's birth certificate she is Margaret Ann, late Fazenfield, formerly Shepherd. Same on her other child's, my great uncle's birth certificate

Yes. I can't find a marriage certificate with Stephen, just Daniel. It's always likely Margaret and Stephen never married

Thank you both for your replies.
I've come across this information and yes, Margaret died in 1909. I've never been able to find any information regarding the children who didn't survive. The baptism records are correct - my grandfather and grand uncle.
They're listed in the 1901 census but their surname is recorded as Hoghan (obviously a mistake).

I've found two very possible military records for Stephen.

I suppose my next step is to get the train up to Dublin and try to find help.

Thanks again.

Hi. I'm trying to find more information about my great grandfather Stephen Hogan, born 1862-64 in Ireland (one census says Dublin) and settled in Liverpool. He was married to Margaret Ann Shepherd (Late Fazenfield) but I have never found any marriage entry for Stephen and Margaret, my great grandparents. They had two living children, John James and Stephen. Stephen died as a teenager in the Liverpool workhouse and my grandfather, John, married Elizabeth Hornby and had eight children. He died in May 1941. Any information at all would be very welcome. I have a Gedmatch number and willing to find any relatives
